On Colin Kaepernick’s Nike Ad: Will the Revolution Be Branded?

In Nike’s antiseptic, hollow corporate-speak, Kaepernick is simply “moving the world forward.” There is no mention here of police violence or racism. And it would be stupid to expect it. This is Nike. Asking them to be a voice for social justice is like asking a dog to meow.

But global, multibillion-dollar corporations that run an archipelago of sweatshops don’t underwrite rebellions. They co-opt and quash them. If anyone can navigate this snakepit, it is Colin Kaepernick, but it won’t be easy. The revolution will not be branded. We should be honest about that. The message of standing up to police violence and racial inequity shouldn’t end up in a swoosh-laded graveyard. That’s the risk that comes with this sponsorship. But if anyone has earned the right to take that risk, it’s Colin Kaepernick.

Dave Zirin makes some good points that I was thinking about myself. The Nike-Kap shyt is cool but this isn't no revolutionary shyt. Nothing is going to change from this campaign, no systemic changes, nothing. It's just PR. You can't fight white supremacy with a white companies money (especially a GOP supporter).

Just another example of people getting caught up in symbolism instead of actual progress....

Shout out to Kap though :salute:

Everyone knows what Kaepernick stands for at this point. For Nike to throw their weight behind him means they support his message in some form or fashion. There's no other way around it. They know they are going to alienate a decent amount of potential customers and they're still going forward with the campaign.

Bullshyt. Well it's truth if you're the idiot that thought protest would lead to all of our problems being solved. What black companies or people offered to fund Kaepernick? How much of his own money does he have to spend? He's doing what he can, it SHOULD be an inspiration for people to help out and do what they can for those who they can touch in whichever way they can.

kaep sacrificed his career, reputation, and has a target on his back from white supremacist for the rest of his life. all for speaking up about a racial injustice against black people when he didn't have to.

i'm just glad he finding ways to make money outside of football and hopes he uses the money to pay his lawyer bills for his collusion case and continue to inspire and help black people.

Out here in my damn drawls
People pessimistic as hell smh

It's not pessimism

The fact is: Nike wouldn't do it if wasn't good for business

They've had sales increases and they're buying back stocks to the tune of $15 billion

They have the NFL and the NBA sewn up for the next 8-10 years

It's not morality, it's money

If a "revolution" is sponsored by a corporation that uses sweatshops to make sure their shoes cost no more than 125 dollars their it's not a revolution lol

If revolution is sponsored by a company that was invited to use prison labor instead of sweatshops then it's not a revolution

If a revolution started with talking about slave patrols to talking about bullshyt ads about bullshyt ideas of girls playing football then it's not a revolution

Gil Scott Heron said the revolution wouldn't be televised

Capitalism and Revolution don't go together

If your revolution consist of a former Superbowl QB and the company that makes the uniforms of the biggest sports league in the richest country of the world...

Then you have loss before the revolution even started...

Dismantling the racist police state and Nike gloves don't go together

ding ding ding. First off Im happy Kap getting $$ from nike and rednck cacs are losing their mind, but this is 100% business move by Nike. If they were really trying to show up the president they wouldnt have pulled out of supporting Iran national team. As soon as they say they can get fined and lose $$ they pulled out with the quickness. Just remember Nike doesnt care about anyone only about $$

Definitely a pessimistic view. Of course its business because it’s a business. It’s also lining Kaps pockets helping him to continue his mission while being backed by the biggest sports brand in the world.

nikkas always focusing on extracting some negative out of everything. That will never lead to positive outcomes.

I keep thinking about that Pepsi using that Jenner broad in a commercial to act out a protest movement, handing out Pepsi’s to everyone. :scust:

If there's anything to take away it's that Nike stand behind it's athletes. But it's a business move, right after that Kap commercial airs you'll see those Nike jerseys on the field :yeshrug:
