Google Fiber To Pay Nearly $4 Million To Louisville In Exit Deal

As Google Fiber prepares to leave Louisville, Kentucky, Google has agreed to pay the city government $3.84 million to fix damage to city streets. "The payments, to be made over 20 months, will cover removing fiber cables and sealant from roads, milling and paving streets 'where needed' and removing Google's above-ground infrastructure," reports WDRB, citing a news release from Mayor Greg Fischer's office.
From the report:
Google Fiber also agreed to donate $150,000 to the Community Foundation of Louisville to support Metro's "digital inclusion" efforts, which include "refurbishing used computers for low-income individuals and the enrollment of public housing residents in low-cost internet access through other companies providing service in Louisville," according to the mayor's office. Google Fiber, a unit of the Silicon Valley tech giant, said Feb. 7 that it would abandon the Louisville market after running into too many problems with the micro-trenching technique it used to install its fiber-optic cables as shallow as two inches below the pavement surface of city streets. Louisville, which lobbied for years to get Google Fiber, has the distinction of being the first city to lose the super-fast internet service.

Not surprised
Google does not want liability jobs or jobs outside of an office

Why are they removing the fiber though they could just sell or lease it to att or the cable provider in Louisville.

The micro trenching they did, did not bury it underground deep enough. The fiber is popping up above ground and becoming damaged by cars, animals etc.

The time and money it would take to repair all that fiber and bury it properly would cost more than what was allocated for the project. No company would buy that infrastructure. The middle and last mile is junk status.

Google's has a habit of just half assing and then abandoning shyt outside of support for their phone OS and browser. Remember Google glasses? Remember Google plus?
Remember Google glasses when Cacs were filming themselves with them on in the shower? LOL

Get overly excited about Google tech Brehs. Show it off like you invented the wheel. And then watch as Google leaves your ass on the side of the road with a hooptie on 4 rims...
Google + , Google Allo, Google Goggles, Glass OS, Google Spaces, Google Nexus, PIcasa etc.

:mjlol::francis:
I used to have Picasa and owned one of the Nexus phones (Verizon only and it was trash)

Given their history, even though it sounds like an infrastructure issue, this is not a good look, especially since the issue was basically Google's fault. The first thing that came to mind was this Ars Technica piece about Google's constant product shutdowns:
Google’s constant product shutdowns are damaging its brand

One possible reason I've seen cited is that it's an internal culture issue, where employees are constantly looking to work on the next big thing vs. supporting an existing product and they're incentivized to work that way. If that's true, they better get a handle on that soon, because going by the comments sections on articles about new Google products and even the comments in this thread, everyday consumers are starting to question whether to bother using their new products because they probably won't support it long enough.

You might be aware of this, but there's an entire "Google graveyard" for all the shyt they gave up on.

But doesn't the fiber flop have to do with ISPs lobbying politicians to rig the game?
