Music Business Worldwide reports that Google may be "very interested" in acquiring SoundCloud, citing "high level rumors" of a potential sale.

A previous report claimed that Spotify had backed out of "advanced talks" to acquire Soundcloud, after the streaming company set its price tag at around $1 billion. Now, the Music Business Worldwide report claims that Soundcloud may be willing to sell for closer to $500 million, with Google emerging as the "current favorite" to buy.

The report also includes information on the stake each of the three major record labels hold in SoundCloud, apparently culled from annual financial filings. According to the report's "rough approximation," Universal, Sony, and Warner Music cumulatively own somewhere in the neighborhood of 8% to 9% of the company, and could cash in to the tune of $45 million on a $500 million sale.

Google is Reportedly Considering Buying SoundCloud For Around $500 Million

Good it needs an injection of cash.

Its a good avenue for artists, much better than bandcamp ever was.

i only used soundcloud for the podcasts. it sucks that as a free user you are able to upload a certain amount of songs. also, there is no 320 kbps download option

These guys gonna plaster it with even more ads like they did YouTube. :francis:

Second, I notice more indie artists are posting their music lately on Spotify more than Soundcloud the past year or so.

How? They actually get paid from Bandcamp, SoundCloud saturates their product rendering it almost negligible in value

Because the interface is ugly, and the user base is nowhere near soundcloud's. Its sometimes better to take the small L on 5 or 10 bucks here and there to get the greater exposure that soundcloud/google could provide.

Not to mention with Google's backing it gets pushed to the foreground as a music service, further exposing small artists to new listeners.

Getting rich off internet music sales should NEVER be the goal, the goal should be provide quality work and get sponsorship.

There're 100,000s of people making music - we have a few on this forum - the vast majority make peanuts as you well know.

An artist needs two things, exposure to promote tours/merch etc and record sales to provide a revenue stream. Soundcloud gives them a platform nothing Spotify & others doesn't without the paltry payouts.

Soundcloud's great for fans like me & you but it's worthless for artist as awhole. I agree BC needs to up their UI but on the whole I appreciate being able to support artists there whereas Soundcloud is just another self serving free for all. Great for me, you and the investors but generally worthless for artists financially. Dance music djs aside.

Artists make virtually nothing from record sales. The vast majority of income for recording artists is appearances, touring and sponsorship/endorsements.

They can get more from writing and production credits.
