Google and Yahoo have accused ad-blocking software Shine of "destroying the relationship" between advertisers and consumers, after an executive from the company called its solution a "nuclear weapon" threatening the industry. Ad blocking software use grew 41 percent in the 12 months to August 2015 and there are now 198 million active adblock users around the world, according PageFair. Benjamin Faes, managing director of media and platforms at Google, called Shine's technology a "blunt" solution that punishes users and good advertisers, and said, "Blocking all ads I think it's diminishing my experience of advertising and in that case we see an issue for the user themselves." It appears that these advertising executives still don't "get it", and are disingenuously tone-deaf to the legitimate complaints raised about ads.

the black cat is my crown...
lol at this... some websites are nothing but ads... maybe if these websites focused on content and better ad placement this wouldn't be an issue.... what's up with the sites that always have creepy pictures for ads... do people really care that much about varicose veins... is it really that profitable?

oh and while i'm complaining, i hate when i go to a site to see a video and they have a video ad autoplaying... now both the video you wanted to see and the stupid video ad are playing over each other.... :pacspit: at the whole ad industry.....

Dude I work in the industry and it's not a factor. There is an easy remedy to this and it involves charging money for what people consider to be a free service.

Google makes something like 60-70% of it's revenue from paid ads and Yahoo probably about 40-50%. They can do what Forbes does which restricts the content until you make an "exception" in the ad blocker - I'm sure they can prevent people from using Google search and Bing as well. I've tried 3rd tier search engines and they suck balls.

It's gonna come down to either tolerating ads or paying to search and view websites online which nobody is going to do. People will tolerate the ads as long as they are relevant. This is not really the big issue they are making it out to be because it has an easy technological and political fix. Also millions of websites have a vested interest in only having to rank high on one search engine - Do you know how many businesses rely on Google's continued success?

If I had to market my smaller clients in 3rd tier search engines they'd have to pay me 3x the amount because it would take me 3x more time to do the work for SEO. Google isn't going anywhere and neither is their prime source of revenue which is paid search ads. Most people use ad block for suspicious sites they use to illegally stream video or other content. Nobody likes adware/malware pop-ups.

Our campaigns have not been affected much. But if push comes to shove it is an easy fix as I mentioned. Have all the ad blocker softwares block users from using search engines or viewing certain sites entirely unless they add an exception which takes all but 5 seconds. Then life goes on and the true spammers die.
