My Dad used to say the Confederacy didn’t lose, not really. Plantation owners got their land right back and got reparations for the loss of their “property and future income”. Lincoln was more concerned about white southern peoples “feelings” about losing.
What should’ve happened was that Sherman should’ve been allowed to complete his “scorched-earth
” policies. The confederacy should’ve lost everything, Embarrass them, strip them of their land, ruin their pride, humiliate them and make them feel shame. Instead the opposite happened and they were allowed to live with dignity and unchecked racial terrorism on freed slaves so that they had something to focus their anger for losing on.
I dont think people realize that the federal government has very little say over curriculum...
