GOP platform panel strikes references to TPP

CLEVELAND — A panel crafting the Republican Party’s platform on trade has removed all references to the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, citing Donald Trump’s rejection of the deal and the difficult politics that Republican incumbents are navigating.

“I think we should take out TPP completely,” said Tracey Monroe-Winburn, an Ohio delegate. “We know that our presumptive nominee isn’t in favor of it, one … and we have some senators who are running across the country that were in support of it at one time.”

The new language must still be vetted by the GOP’s full Platform Committee Monday afternoon.

Andy Puzder, one of the co-chairs of the GOP platform economic subcommittee, suggested that TPP has become too thorny of an issue to take a specific stand on. Trump has found flaws in the current version, he said. Rather than wade into the specific agreement, he suggested embracing a broad trade platform that discourages “massive trade deficits,” negotiating better trade deals and enforcing existing deals.

“Who can argue with we shouldn’t have such big deficits?” he wondered.

The language Puzder described would dovetail more completely with Trump’s language on trade.

The platform initially urged the Republican-led Congress to reject efforts to “rush” passage of the TPP, particularly during a lame-duck session of Congress, but now simply suggests that “significant” trade decisions shouldn’t be rushed. That was already a stark shift from the GOP’s platform adopted in 2012. That document encouraged a Republican president to “complete negotiations” for the TPP “to open rapidly developing Asian markets to U.S. products.”

Smartest thing for them to do. TPP is a ticking time bomb for the Democrats. They just don't seem to recognize that at this moment for some dumb ass reason.

Good. Its about time the Republicans stop selling us down the line. Now we just need the Dems to get on board and not that flipflop Hillary bs.

Speaking of flip-flopping

"We hear terrible things about outsourcing jobs — how sending work outside of our companies is contributing to the demise of American businesses," wrote Trump. "But in this instance I have to take the unpopular stance that it is not always a terrible thing."

Seriously, it's terrible that I feel like I can formulate the clearest path for a Trump victory in November with the information out already despite his stupid fukkery.

I'll agree with you that he's guilty of it. He's a business man and outsourcing was within the rules because of NAFTA. Now that he's seeking political office, he's looking to change the rules so people like himself can't outsource American jobs. I'll take it :yeshrug:

You seriously believe that bloated gasbag? He's running on renegotiating trade deals (which is bullshyt). He's promising the VERY BEST DEALS THAT FAVOR AMERICA. It's vague bullshyt. A man that takes advantage of foreign labor - a man as money hungry as TRUMP - isn't going to go on a crusade against trade deals.

Even if all he said was "We're going to renegotiate" that would be 100x better than what any other presidential candidate said on this issue.
I don't want TPP to pass and I'd prefer if we re-negotiated NAFTA or eliminated it as well. These two major deals are highly negative in the long term for the middle and lower class in America.

While we're on the topic, Trump's words about a trade war with China are spot on as well. These trade deals would be much more fair if the Chinese didn't manipulate their currency at every step of the way. It defeats the purpose and its why we have such a large trade gap with China. I'll take a slightly more expensive price on cheap plastic goods rather than have China fukking us every chance they can.

Trump's lip service isn't enough for me. Now, if he stopped taking advantage of foreign labor and brought those jobs home, then I would probably listen. Further, how would getting rid of NAFTA or renegotiating NAFTA work, exactly? Wrt China, what's the solution there? Tariffs [1]? Lowering/removing regulations? I've read that Trump's position is ignorant on trade. Is that true?
