Great song.

Ahead of it's time imo. At that time, only like Kanye (and a few others) could rap vulnerable personal stuff like this...everyone else had to be on some super gangster stuff all the time.

Yup good point, not too many street rappers were on that wave when it dropped. Off top I know Wayne had his somber joints Z-Ro and Trae, and Joe Budden who I wouldn’t consider gangster. But it ushered in the Futures and rappers in that lane

Even though it was a bit ahead of its time in that regard, it still was well-received. I do think, however, that if he came out a few years later with it, in a time more receptive to that type of rap from a "gangster" rapper, it could've been a mega-hit.

Yeah Wayne had a few, but he's really versatile and when he was at the top of his game he could put out just about anything and people would've rocked with it. Wayne is not the run of the mill rapper anyway, so that should be considered when looking at that.

Z-Ro had a lot of those too, though he had built up his fanbase from the underground scene, I felt Zoe was more of on a mainstream platform where artists weren't accustomed to going outside the box creatively as much then.

And ditto your sentiments on Budden.
