JACKSON, Miss. —
Mama Mosie Burks, a gospel music pioneer, has died.
Burks, 92, was best known for her performances with the Mississippi Mass Choir.
"Mama Mosie's powerful voice, unshakable faith and joyful spirit touched hearts around the world and helped define the sound and soul of the Mississippi Mass Choir," according to a Facebook post by the choir. "Her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."

Her voice can be heard on some of the Mississippi Mass Choir's popular songs, including "They Got the Word," "I'm Not Tired Yet," and "This Morning When I Rose."
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, friends and family members drove to surprise Burks at her nursing home to celebrate her 87th birthday. Watch the video below.
