Jan 11, 2016 — Governor Andrew Cuomo will move to close more state correctional facilities. He made the announcement on Sunday while addressing a church congregation in Harlem.

"I'm going to go down in the history books as the governor who closed the most prisons in the history of the State of New York and I am proud of it," Cuomo told parishioners at Mt. Neboh Baptist Church. "I want to close more prisons with more alternatives to incarceration."

During his time in office, Cuomo has already closed thirteen state prisons, including facilities near Glens Falls, Malone, and Saranac Lake.

Sunday's announcement also included a plan to pay for more college education for inmates. Two years ago, Cuomo proposed restoring state-funded college classes in prisons, but the idea was shot down by the Republican-controlled state Senate.

In the governor's plan now, more than $7 million for the program will come from a criminal forfeiture fund that can be spent without the legislature's approval. "We have colleagues in Albany who aren’t ready to do that and don't want to pay for those programs. So you can tell me no. I just find another way to get there, that's all," Cuomo said.

In recent days, Governor Cuomo has been unveiling proposals that he hopes to implement over the next year. Brian Mann will have more on this story tomorrow.

i can understand why the senate still refuses to college educate inmates. they will help you graduate high school and throw some classes at you to maintain your boredom, but they wont help you get a college degree in prison. i guess they think its not their place to pay for that type education or they think a lot of smart dumb men will do shyt JUST to get into the system to get a free degree.
but, they should be putting more libraries in prison. if they wont put the $$ up for paper degrees then they should put some $$ into an updated library with digital access for the inmates.
they get to sit and read OUTSIDE the cell. teaches them how to focus and retain knowledge swiftly and quikkly., teaches computer skills and teaches how to retain an attention span.
find what they like to read about and OPEN their mind to be able to take classes and get decent grades when they get out jail.
sometimes these politicians fight for ONE thing and when they get defeated they dont try to figure out another way to accomplish it. all they do is just keep pushing the SAME thing and getting shot down.
