Apple Canceled 'The Banker' Premiere Amid Sexual Abuse Claims Against Real-Life Subject's Son

On Nov. 5, Bernard Garrett Jr. was onstage at an entertainment industry event with George Nolfi, who directed the new Apple original movie The Banker. The film tells the story of Garrett Jr.’s. father, a black man who recruited a white man to front his growing financial business some six decades ago in a pre-Civil Rights Act America. Garrett Jr., initially billed as a co-producer of The Banker, was supposed to be one of its faces, along with stars Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Mackie, during the film’s press tour.

Since the Nov. 5 event, though, Garrett Jr.’s credit has disappeared from publicity materials, further appearances have been canceled, and today Apple scrapped the film's Thursday night AFI Film Festival premiere.

Wow, I was wondering why it went quiet on this movie.

Consider it sunk, As Apple will quietly shelve it.

In a statement, Apple said that it was made aware of “some concerns” surrounding the film last week. Along with the filmmakers, Apple then made the decision to delay the debut:

“Last week some concerns surrounding the film were brought to our attention,” Apple said in a statement on Wednesday. “We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into these matters and determine the best next steps.”

Apple has “yet to make a decision about the film’s theatrical release,” according to The New York Times. The American Film Institute did not receive word of the change until today, further indicating how last-minute of a decision it was for Apple.

The Banker” is based on the true story of Bernard Garrett and Joseph Morris, two African-American entrepreneurs who sought to financially empower black Americans by buying homes in white neighborhoods for them to rent and offering loans to black-owned businesses. Trying to get around discrimination by the banking establishment, they recruited a working-class white man as their frontman.

The pair later expanded their ambitions, acquiring banks in the South. In 1965, Mr. Garrett and Mr. Morris testified at a congressional hearing on misconduct in the federally insured banking system, and they were later convicted of misusing funds.

One person with knowledge of Apple’s decision, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said a relative of one of the film’s main characters had raised some concerns.

So the movie hasn't actually been cancelled yet

Yeah exactly. They’ve filmed it all and said they need to time to figure things out. It’s not cancelled

I mean it’s fair play. If the son who worked on it and shares the same name (and is probably in the film as a baby) has been accused of something sexually abusive..the show should be in doubt.

Apple are a very family/people first company and are very sensitive to human issues. If they cancel it, I’m not surprised.

If guilty, we need to have more anger towards the son for being selfish and not pre-exposing himself as a criminal before working on this show. The white man didn’t make him commit a crime.
