Grantland would be a great site if their articles werent so god damn long.

1st hand account timeline from of 90's Magic - From Jordan, Penny, Shaq, Kenny Anderson, Brian Shaw, Horace Grant, Jerry West etc.

Goes into almost everything - Why they chose Penny over C-Webb, 95 Playoffs, Shaq Leaving etc.

Just got done reading it and came here to make the thread. It's fantastic.

Look at this fukking quote about Del Harris :dead:

Two days before the Lakers signed O’Neal, West and Vancouver Grizzlies general manager Stu Jackson agreed to a deal that sent George Lynch to L.A. and Anthony Peeler to Vancouver in exchange for the ability to swap second-round picks in 1998 and 1999. It was almost unheard of in those days for a team to give up rotation players for so little in return, and several teams werereportedly angry that Vancouver allowed the Lakers to free up cap space for O’Neal without taking a player back in the deal. Even then-Lakers coach Del Harris had trouble recognizing what the trade would mean for the Lakers’ future when it was first announced. "Del felt with Sedale Threatt and Anthony Peeler, he had the best backcourt in the NBA from one through four," a source close to Harris told the New York Daily News. "Now he only has two proven guards and he’s not happy."

That guy was a horrible coach.

These long ass pieces from Grantland are always worthwhile.

It's interesting to see that Shaq's ego probably dismantled that Magic team (and then again on the Lakers). They were so frail mentally if four (albeit the most important four) free throws ruined their title chances. Could you imagine the outcry if that shyt happened nowadays? Nick Anderson might have had to retire immediately.

Low balling the future of your franchise was a dumbass thing to do. But I think Shaq and his agent always wanted him to head to LA.
