They suspect the birds were killed by toxic fumes. Even if it wasn't and they all ate something and died, whatever the source of it, could be hazardous to anything that consumes it.

This reminds me of that show called flash forward and there was a large machine which fukked with the birds senses causing them to kill themselves, like a high beam signal interfering with the avionics...
