As a law student, Bryan Stevenson was sent to a maximum security prison to meet a man on death row. The man told Stevenson he’d never met an African-American lawyer, and the two of them talked for hours. It was a day that changed Stevenson’s life. He’s spent the last 30 years working to get people off of death row, but has also spent the final hours with men he could not save from execution. He argues that each of us is deserving of mercy.

Learn more about Bryan Stevenson in his book, Just Mercy.
Definitely picking up this book. Really good interview. I recommend folks listen to it when you get a chance.

He makes a great analogy at one point of the interview for why the death penalty in this country is absolutely fukked and unjust. Based on how many people have been freed from deathrow, for every 9 executions there is one person found innocent and released. If planes had a 1 out of 9 chance of crashing, no one would fly.

the black cat is my crown...
wow... we live in such an incredibly hateful world.... i'll never understand what fills someone's heart so full of hate.... some people get angrier at a skin color than they do when someone actually does something to harm them.... the true history of slavery and racism in this country should be taught to every black child.... no black person should ever again think we will win the favor of such wretched people..... btw, we shouldn't want to win the favor of these monsters anyhow....

He had a great interview a few years ago on NPR with Teri Gross, and i've seen a few appearances of him on MSNBC and PBS over the years. Havent read the book yet, but he provides really insightful info on the racism prevalebt in the justice system.

Yep that is what most impressed me about him. His ability to weave the black experience with the law and justice system as a whole. In fact it reminds me of that sarcastically titled thread in TLR I think it was about a dallas police officer saying there needs to be more black lawyers, police officers, and judges and people in there were being as cynical and dismissive of the statement as the title was. I was in there arguing the opposite.

I understand the desire to abandon the system all together and just say fukk it, which I'm on board to some degree. In the mean time, until there is a realistic chance black people as a whole can leave this fukked up country, we need defensive barriers in place such as people like this guy.
