Ground Hogs, Super Bowl, and Media Coverage of Weather: Lessons

The groundhog is a rodent in the family Sciuridae. But to some, at least one species is probably the best known short-term climatologist in the world. It is a fun tradition in the United States, and one that I have fun with as well.

However, on a more serious note, I wanted to take the time to share some thoughts on coverage of a well-known almanac series that predicted a storm during the Super Bowl on February 2nd, 2014 and other aspects of the forthcoming winter. This caught my attention because the 2014 American Meteorological Society (AMS) Annual Meeting "kicked off" (pun intended) on Super Bowl Sunday. I found it ironic that the largest U.S. gathering of weather and climate expertise also fell on Groundhog day. Would the AMS meeting of the best minds in weather and climate sharing the latest insights and findings on weather lead the news cycle or would the Groundhog? Yep, you guessed it.

I tweeted (follow me @DrShepherd2013), "What do you think the public is most familiar with? (a) Various Farmers' Almanacs (b) Groundhog Day (c) NOAA's Climate Prediction Center." I would guess that most of the public would not select (c). I had a conversation with a broadcast meteorologist friend and colleague. FRIEND: "But Marshall, we always cover almanac predictions/Groundhog day, the public and news directors love it", ME: "I always had cassette tapes as a kid too, but times change." In my humble opinion, to reinforce oversimplistic, folklore material in the public digs a deeper science literacy "hole" in the U.S. My cousin or mom (i.e. The Public) get the bulk of their science education from the media sources. Increasingly, younger generations also learn from social media. To be clear, I get it. I do have a sense of humor and am a fun-loving guy. Many of these traditions are based on history, culture and fun. I have fun with them as well.

The problem is that I find many instances of people basing real arguments/decisions on this type of stuff at the expense of real science. Guess what the headline was in almost every major news outlet on 26 August 2013. "Almanac predicts major storm on 2014 Super Bowl Sunday." NOAA Climate Prediction Center or El Nino-based seasonal forecasts are mainstays in the scientific community and use scientifically vetted methods. Yet, popular culture gravitates to rodents and alamanacs based on methodologies tangentially related to science (sunspots, tidal actions, and other factors) but not of scientific rigor and evaluation. By the way, there was no storm.

My concern is that "perception often becomes reality" based on my experiences with interacting with public and decision-makers. People often base science (especially weather/climate) viewpoints on confirmation bias (science that supports their belief system or experiences) or overly simple narratives.

A few of examples of come to mind. First, there are people that actually think the government is controlling our brain with man-made clouds coming from airplanes. If you don't believe me, ask any TV meteorologist or National Weather Service colleague about the calls they get weekly about this. Second, people often say that "weather forecasts are bad" based on singular events. In fact, 1 to 5 day forecasts are quite good. However, people make that statement on an isolated event (wedding, picnic) that was affected by rain or a lack of understanding of what "percent chance of rainfall" means. I can't tell you how often I hear, "Hey, it is raining where I am, I thought there was only a 20% chance of rain, see those meteorologists don't know what they are talking about"--by the way, this is a good link to clarify what % chance means, http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/?n=pop). People tend to overlook the more numerous (nearly daily) correct forecasts, and they tend to amplify the bad forecast. Seattle's offensive coordinator made a bad call in the Super Bowl, but he is still a good coordinator and has made a lot of right calls this year too. Yet, he is being heavily criticized in the sports world (me included). It is our nature to remember the rare event that has high impact (e.g., recent NE Blizzard and NYC debacle).

The concepts of probability, climatology, deterministic forecasting, and other technical terms are familiar to most meteorologists or climatologists. However, my mom has no idea what some of that stuff means (and she is pretty smart woman by the way). We as scientists and media communicators must find ways to convey information to the public to inform them, enrich their knowledge, and mitigate against misinformation. So, yes, I blogged on a "seemingly trivial" topic because "science literacy" or decisions can be shaped by such topics. This is particularly more evident to me as the public continues to be willing to consume information from its "source of choice" or social media irrespective of whether it has been vetted or properly explained.

People will often challenge me when I explain to them what "heat lightning" or other concepts are because it is not what their grandpa told them. I am not against tradition as long as it is accurate.

Groundhog Says: Six More Weeks of Winter!
In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, home of the world's most famous prognosticating rodent,Punxsutawney Phil, 3" of snow had fallen by Sunday evening, and on Monday morning the town was beset by a lovely wintry mix of snow, rain and freezing rain that only a hibernating groundhog could love. However, the skies cleared briefly at sunrise on Monday morning, allowing Punxsutawney Phil to see his shadow and make his usual fearless prognostication for the remainder of winter:

Forecasts abound on the Internet,
But I, Punxsutawney Phil, am still your best bet,
Yes, A shadow I see, you can start to twitter,

How did this this crazy tradition start?
It all started in Europe, centuries ago, when February 2 was a holiday called Candlemas (much like Halloween and May Day, Candlemas is another ancient holiday positioned near the halfway point between solstice and equinox.) On Candlemas, people prayed for mild weather for the remainder of winter. The superstition arose that if a hibernating badger woke up and saw its shadow on Candlemas, there would be six more weeks of severe winter weather. When Europeans settled the New World, they didn't find any badgers. So, instead of building wooden badgers, they decided to use native groundhogs (aka the woodchuck, land beaver, or whistlepig) as their prognosticating rodent.

The Groundhog Oscillation: convincing evidence of climate change!
According to a 2001 article published in the prestigious Annals of Improbable Research, "The Groundhog Oscillation: Evidence of Global Change", Punxsutawney Phil's forecasts have shown a high variability since 1980. This pattern, part of the larger "Groundhog Oscillation" or GO cycle, is convincing evidence of human-caused climate change.

Grading Phil's forecasts
NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) analyzed Punxsutawney Phil’s forecasts over the past 27 years (thanks to Doyle Rice of USA Today for pointing this out.) If we evaluate just the twelve years when the departure of February and March temperatures from average over the contiguous U.S. were both of the same sign, Phil had five correct forecasts and seven blown forecasts. NOAA concludes that“It really isn't a 'bright' idea to take a measure such as a groundhog's shadow and use it as a predictive meteorological tool for the entire United States.”

What the pros say
The latest 16-day run of the GFS model shows the jet stream remaining farther south than usual over the eastern half of the U.S. during the coming two weeks, with our omnipresent "Ridiculously Resilient Ridge" of high pressure anchored over the Western U.S. This pattern will result in colder than average temperatures over the eastern half of the country, and warmer than average temperatures over the western half. The latest 1-month forecast from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) shows this pattern dominating through February. The latest seasonal forecast from WSI.com agrees with this idea, but predicts that a warmer than average pattern may emerge over the Midwest and South during the last week of February, with below average temperatures confined to just the Northeast. Heading into March and April, WSI predicts warmer than average conditions across the northern tier of states, and cooler than average over the South (except for California, which will remain warm.) The latest 3-month forecasts for February - April from Columbia University's International Research Institute for Climate and Society and from CPC show the odds for cold weather easing over the Eastern U.S. during the period February - April, with near-equal chances of above or below-average temperatures. They forecast increased odds of cooler than average weather over Texas, with increased odds of warmer than average weather along the West Coast.
