Keith Law from the Athletic thinks he’s not gonna stick at SS as his career progresses:

Kilby has one of the simplest and quietest approaches in the draft, college or high school, with a swing that’s short and direct and gets the bat to the ball consistently. He showed excellent contact skills and a low chase rate at tracked events last summer, swinging at just 9 percent of pitches beyond the shadow of the zone, with 40 power now but a chance to get to average as he fills out and perhaps with a little fine-tuning in the box. He’s a fringe-average runner who’s not going to stick at shortstop, ending up at second or third instead. He’s committed to Clemson.

Don’t worry about that.

SS’s tend to get picked up regardless because they’re easier to shift positionally as they develop.
MLB draft is also the biggest crapshoot of any of them, I don't think teams are worried about positional overlap or addressing holes. Just pick whoever you think is gonna become a viable player and it sorts itself out by default.

The Yankees selected shortstop Dax Kilby with the No. 39 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft.
Kilby, 18, is No. 62 in MLB.com's prospect rankings.
From Newnan High School in Georgia, Kilby signed with Clemson University's 2025 recruiting class before the Yanks took him with their first selection of the draft in the Competitive Balance Round A. The pick carries a $2,509,500 slot value.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder is a left-handed batter and right-handed thrower.

"One of the more polished high school bats available, Kilby has a track record of producing against quality competition on the showcase circuit," said MLB.com's scouting report of Kilby. "There are questions about his long-term defensive home, but his hitting ability could land him as high as the second round if he's signable away from a Clemson commitment. He led Newnan HS to the Georgia state 5-A championship this spring, the Cougars' first title in 34 years.

"Kilby has a quick and relatively compact left-handed stroke and a mature approach. He doesn't stray from the strike zone too often and makes consistent contact while looking to drive the ball from gap to gap. He has plenty of room to add strength to his projectable 6-foot-2 frame and should grow into at least average power.

"Though Kilby has plus straight-line speed, he plays as more of an average to solid runner. Bothered by shoulder issues early in his high school career, he has a funky arm action and can't make all the throws necessary from shortstop. He'll get a look at second base and also could wind up in left field, though he still may provide enough offense to profile at the less challenging position."

Ben Rice OPS

March/April: .958
May: .739
June: .636

:scusthov:

His underlying contact metrics suggest he should be feasting. Maybe it’ll stabilize in the 2nd half but he’s been frustrating.

They traded Trey Sweeney for Victor Gonzalez lol, I don’t think Gonzalez is even in the league anymore lol.

I’m actually surprised how many guys they’ve held on to in the 10+ years, thought it would have been less.

and Vivas

I hated that trade only because I thought Sweeney could help us at 3B.

The Sweeney situation made Cashman look bad because LA flipped Sweeney for Jack Flaherty

Brian Cashman is the WOAT

:mjlol:

13- Clarkin, sucked, but him and Rutherford were in the trade for Houdini, Kahnle and Todd Frazier
13- Jagielo, sucked but was flipped to Cincy for Chapman
15- Holder, sucked, was Volpe without the organizational push to justify his existence
15- Kaprielian, hurt, was in the trade for Sonny Gray, which in the end, nobody won. Only one who turned out ok was Mateo and that was in Baltimore
16- Rutherford, see Clarkin
17- Schmidt, made it, but hurt again, still hold out hope that he can be Jordan Montgomery
18- Seigler, sucked, was a kneejerk reaction to missing out on Ohtani since he could pitch and hit. Sucked at both. Somehow made it to the show with MIL this year
19- Volpe- made it, has a gold glove and a 20/20 season, but has regressed ever since
19- Sikkema- flipped to KC for Benintendi
20- Wells, made it, starting C for us.
21- Sweeney, flipped to LA for Vivas/Gonzalez
22- Jones- best prospect in system at the moment, probably best served as a trade chip
23- Lombard- 2nd best prospect in system, looks like he can either be our future SS or 3B.
24- Hess- garbage off the name alone. He's only elite at strikeouts, so likely middle relief.

mixed results which are made worse by the fact that his subsequent picks almost never hit

It's like you're the making the case for firing Cashman. :lolbron:
