Guy gets shoplifting ticket for getting a refill

As reported by WCSC Live 5 News, construction worker Christopher Lewis was working on-site at the downtown Charleston VA Medical center and during lunch in the hospital cafeteria, he grabbed a refill of his drink without paying. Lewis failed to notice posted signs indicating that refills were not free. "As I was filling my cup up, I turned to walk off and a fella grabbed me by the arm and asked me, ‘Was I going to pay for that?’ And I told him I wasn't aware that I had to pay for that," Lewis recalled. The construction worker said that he never saw the posted signs and admitted that he had refilled drinks in the past without paying.

Mr. Lewis then attempted to pay for the $0.89 refill, but he said that he was not allowed to. The officer, who is also the chief of the Federal Police Force that patrols the VA hospital, issued Lewis a ticket for shoplifting. "I never had an option to make right what I had done wrong," said Lewis. "Every time I look at the ticket, it's unbelievable to me, you know. I can't fathom the fact that I made an 89 cent mistake that cost me $525." A hospital spokesperson called his actions theft of government property.

Sue for what,he was in the wrong. Not saying I agree with the ticket, I mean he should've been able to just pay for the refill but technically he was shoplifting.

He was gonna pay..it was only 89 cents..he's a construction worker so clearly he has the money to pay..he didn't know he had to pay for refills..sounds like unlawful detainment..false imprisonment..what ever cases cane be used to issue false accusations..and slander..I would get the best attorney and sue the federal agency and the store..

He was never detained or arrested. He was just issued a ticket. Again, I don't agree with it, but technically he was in the wrong. There was a sign there that he failed to read and Ignorance of the law is not an excuse to not follow it.

When the officer grabbed him, that is detainment and false imprisonment..the officer committed a felony..

But I'm suing mostly for slander..I'm asking for over a million since they drug my name thru the mud on every media circuit as a criminal and not liable to find work since my name is out there..also stress and depression from the media..trauma..all that..

breh the same thing happened to me last year..i didn't know like dude..so I've been going to SF almost every week since a teen..and everyone gets on the back of the bus at the bus stop..I used to always think it was legal..I used to always do it ...so last year I go out there with my teenage nephew..we get on the back of the bus...2 transit cops come to to my seat..they ask me to show em my transfer..I told them I didn't have a transfer..they tell me that they're giving me a ticket..I'm like I'm from Oakland and I didn't know I was supposed to have a transfer..dudes like let me see you're ID..so back then I was pretty buff..I took off my jacket and was acting like I was gonna fight him..dude backed down the steps and got on the walkie talkie..I was hella mad..I ended up giving him my ID and he gave me a ticket,,I threw it in the trash when I got off... Then a month later they mailed it..still haven't paid..

They got me and my homie like this years ago in H.S. For hopping the light-rail w/o tickets at the mall. We was in the wrong cause we knew what we were doing but still got caught anyway. Got to the point where the real police showed up and threatened to arrest us.
