A phone is about the worst thing you can steal. And no doing a factory reset won't save you.

A lot of those programs can still track the device after a reset because they don't require anything to be installed on the phone. At least with non-apple phones which will still be in service after the reset.

Even if the person can't track it they can generally call their provider and get the phone's serial number put on the stolen list preventing you from using it on another account. I'm sure there's ways around this but most people who'd resort to thieving phones aren't aware of them.

All phones can be tracked by IMEI. Tablets with cellular support too. Devices are tracked by IMEI regardless of factory reset and sim insterted.

That's why shyt like that - Apple Store Robbery: Armed Raid In Paris is useless

This isn't true if you're on Sprint. I don't know how other carriers work.

Sprint won't track your lost phone for you, and you'll need to use a third party app/program to do it. A lot of times you can track it but just having the IMEI won't do much.

They can still shut the phone down and turn it into a paperweight though.

How far you want to take this logic though? Anytime someone leaves something unattended it's finders keepers?

If you go to the library use a computer and leave some of your personal information on it can I just steal your identity w/o repercussion since you left it there?

The guy was knowingly in possession of someone else's property. He had multiple options which included leaving it in the cab, or making an attempt to contact the owner using the information stored in the phone. Instead he decided to pick up the phone and download dating apps using the owner's e-mail.

There's a difference between being a victim and being a dumbass.

And what was the $20 about? That shyt went right over my head. :heh:

He gave him the $20 in exchange for returning the phone. Giving him $20 costs way less than having to come out of pocket or pay a deductible to get it replaced.

LOL that finder's keeper's ish doesn't wash with the law.

According to the laws of new york state:

1. A person steals property and commits larceny when, with intent to
deprive another of property or to appropriate the same to himself or to
a third person, he wrongfully takes, obtains or withholds such property
from an owner thereof.

............(b) By acquiring lost property.
A person acquires lost property when he exercises control over
property of another which he knows to have been lost or mislaid, or to
have been delivered under a mistake as to the identity of the recipient
or the nature or amount of the property, without taking reasonable
measures to return such property to the owner;

so what he was going to hit the guy with the hammer and then explain to the cops that the guy found his smartphone was using it and was tricked into meeting him (the owner) and refused to give him the phone back so he was then hit with a hammer? :usure:

No, it's more like "I don't want to have to fukk you up with this hammer, so gimme my phone back, take this $20 and get the fukk on".
