-

there is an historic hatred between indian and brehs in guyana with people voting along racial lines and the party in power excluding the other.

indians dominate economically and have the larger population.

they even brought in an indian to fix skills shortages rather then fish locally in the caribbean where the newcomers are more likely to be brehs.

that change rolled back in the next election ^^^

now guyana has oil and is one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

added corruption is massive with few controls acerbated by the oil driven growing wealth and power divide.

and then there is jagdeo.

:camby:

Yeah they been hating each other over there. Thank you British colonization

Yeah for ExxonMobil. The actual country is getting fukked
Yes, 5,000 families are benefiting and the other 750,000 are wondering when they’ll get crumbs.

Real estate is crazy in Georgetown.

But the country is now getting rich in aggregate and won’t even be eligible for overseas development assistance in a year or two

what’s an acceptable ratio?

Not trolling just asking

A foreign company bestowed a lifeline to a failing country that otherwise would have been invaded by its neighbor if not for the fact its neighbor is corrupt, unpopular, and feckless…

...so what does a a “successful” partnership look like that escapes these sorts of critiques that the arrangement is unfair? And please, be specific.

Above the fray.
@null

The foreign secretary mentioned the 4 places they've had the job fairs.
Sites were NYC, Usa, Chaguanas,Trinidad. Nickerie, Suriname , and Toronta, Canada.
The first and last ones were posted about in this thread.

If they had one in India, post the news coverage or sm post from his dept here.

Otherwise, time to walk it back.

walk what back. that is targeted at guyanese abroad. the plurality of guyanese are indian btw.

my point is that guyana has been (past tense) importing Indians (from india) to help with the shortage. issuing visas for that purpose.

rather than focusing on caricom (and the replacement for unasur). caricom already has skills based freedom of movement but incomers are more likely to be black, which works against their advantage in the electorate.

FOM is shifting to all people soon Free movement for all people – CARICOM Heads decide at historic meeting – CARICOM

i.e. they don't want a heavily skewed black population influx because of their policies.

explain why that needs to be walked back.

be specific.

A foreign company

there are multiple oil companies in guyana. not just US ones.

"lifeline"? guyana was not "dying".

although relatively poor for western hemisphere standards guyana had a GDP of around 5-6K GDP per capita which is above basket-case levels.

bestowed a lifeline to a failing country that otherwise would have been invaded by its neighbor if not for the fact its neighbor is corrupt, unpopular, and feckless…

two big problems with the exxon contract

1: clean up costs are paid by guyana - which in the worst case could push gains -ve.

2: low % and all expenses paid by guyana - before application of %-age payment to GY.

it has already been assessed as a poor arrangement for guyana BUT ali's (well jagdeo's) govt already agreed to not renegotiate them when they took power.

Yes. It’s insane. If you ever go to Georgetown, the Marriott is the place to be. The Pegasus next door is like the next option. U.S. Embassy is right there too.

All the foreigners stay in the Marriott. During Covid, the oil companies reserved blocks of rooms for people to stay months on end and as quarantine areas. That was how the hotel stayed open.

Once restrictions were lifted, the hotel prices jumped as there is big demand from the oil sector plus all the other visitors, corporate and government events.

There’s a shortage of hotels and housing now.

When I went to Guyana in 2019, I could stay at the Marriott for $179 a night with my Marriott account.

I last went into 2023 and it was $390 a night which was weeks before an energy conference that shot the prices up to $1,000 a night :damn:

It is so sad that 23andme has imploded, because they were putting out some fantastic research on the places that enslaved Igbos were taken. Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the United States were some of the places that they mentioned. It had to be in fairly high high numbers for the DNA to still be so prevalent.

This nearly 4 year old thread and the post you replied to are about Guyana making overtures to recruit their diaspora back.

Your query about whether the latest set of overtures (job fairs held abroad) were held in India was answered.
No. Just concede what is obvious.

With all due respect to the historic and current racial and political dynamics in Guyana, dont move goal posts.
