No Joke...
First of all we all know what Lupe is capable of, which of course moving mountains.
He owns hip hop with the following qualities
1) Flow
2) Lyrics
3) Content
And after all that this much hate?
Look at Styles P, remember that call he had on air with 50 Cent and then Camron called, that's when the whole CURTISSSSSSS started.
And then a huge Curtisss wave started and then 50 renamed his album "Curtis" **Boss Move** SLAMMMM
But P said "You forgot where you came from"
And you all know Styles, he got his cred and he remembers
But how is he remembering?
How much positive music is he releasing? What's the use of remembering struggle and growing up in harsh hoods when you grow up and glamorize it?
How many rappers who claim to be hood, made it, and still remembers?
You may think of it as a weak point for Lupe to cry on TV but look how extreme Chicago killings has become.
I'm just saying...
One of only a few rappers that decided not to get a$$ fukced and sign a 360 deal
He got the cred, the flow, the lyrics, the content and he's no fake despite how his hair looks
But as he says "I don't feel I need to defend my hair, what's that got to do with music?"
He refuses to conform to the norm while others employ image consultants.
I'm just saying
He doens't care about bling but instead calls such facade rappers cartoons as you know from the freedom ain't free video and released that sick diamonds are forever remix talking about where that bling comes from
What am I saying is.... Don't we need MORE of this type of behavior?
Don't forget one thing
It's too easy to flame the guy who is talking about something
Because it's easy to flame someone for something
But it's harder to flame so many that talks about nothing, especially when nothing has become the norm.
So just remember why you aren't hating on other rappers so much
Just to put it in perspective
Just wanted to say I read this, and understand where your coming from. Now, what I'm about to type, you might not agree, and that's a testimony to music being largely subjective.
So Lupe is talented, you won't get any argument from me. He's comfortable enough in his own skin to put out a product with substance and willing to stand behind any controversy he sparks. However, just because he's talented and conscious doesn't mean he's interesting enought to bother listening to for an entire album's worth of material.
Several years back I was in a used record store and for the life of me I can't recall what I was purchasing that day, but working the register was two people who were what I like to call the prototype for the hipster...............the pretentious azz backpacker. The one was cool with me and we always talked about Hip Hop and he was big on Aesop Rock and trying desperately to convince me to give dude a listen. Being that I was a fan back then of RJD2's production and they were in the same camp, I figured what the hell. That was roughly 40 minutes of my life that I'll never get back trying to force myself to like that mess. That's not to say Aesop is wack juice, but one man's trash is another man's treasure.
I feel largely the same way about Lupe. Despite being conscious, he'll never grab my attention like Chuck D, Ice Cube, or Nas. Despite being a wordsmith, he'll never get more rotation on my playlist than Kendrick Lamar or Ab-Soul. Despite having the credibility to speak about street shyt, he'll never get more rotation on my playlist than Jay-Z, Gangsta Gibbs or Schoolboy Q. The reality is, Lupe is a pretentious bore birthed by 2012 backpackers now known as hipsters, and judging by the hate he garners.....plenty of people agree with me.
Again though, music is subjective, so my opinion means nothing. Go head and support that man's music, I aint mad at you. But stop trying to make everybody else a believer. Ain't nobody gotta attempt making a believer about Kendrick Lamar as his product speaks for itself and Dre, XXL, Lady Gaga amongst plenty of other people know what it is. Can't say the same for Lupe Touche', at least not in 2012.
edit post: perfect example of what I'm trying to say, let's take Music to Driveby by CMW which is in my top 10 Hip Hop albums ever. Eiht could never pen the verses that Lupe has and will continue to do. But what Eiht lacks in lyrica genious, is more than made up for in mic presense, aggressive content, proper production to support that early 90ish Compton shyt! Lupe is largely a bore attempting to teach me about shyt that he barely comprehends behind bland production. I can't fukk with that. For the record though, I'm rooting for him as I love seeing young sucessful blacks doing what they want.
