Several of this holiday's high-profile releases has failed to meet sales expectations for GameStop, with net software sales down 9.3 percent for the retailer when compared to last year.

During today's earnings call (via GameSpot), GameStop CEO Paul Raines revealed to investors that both Halo 5: Guardians and Assassin's Creed: Syndicate underperformed. While speculation made lead some to believe the rise in digital purchases is the culprit -- especially in light of Halo 5's stellar performance last month -- Raines is confident digital sales weren't higher than what the company was originally anticipating.



J.J. Abrams' new Star Wars film, which opens in theaters next month. In fact, the retailer believes the sci-fi shooter will be one of its top-selling titles during the holiday quarter.

Bad news for the industry, but maybe a good wake up call to these publishers putting out these mediocre ass games.

Though to be fair Halo 5 isnt mediocre multiplayer wise, it's actually very well made. But the series as a whole is stale now and it's time for something new.
