Ring Around the Moon (1-21-13)


I was hanging out in the backyard watching as Jupiter crept closer and closer to the moon, taking a photo every once in a while when slowly, but noticeably, a ring appeared around the moon. It became very intense, then faded, but continued to reappear as the high, thin clouds blew by. Amazing.

Known as a "moon ring" or "winter halo," this phenomena is caused by ice crystals high in the atmosphere reflecting the moon's light.

We are looking at the same fantastic moon ring above our house in Florida right now! It is hard to appriciate any stars inside the ring other than Jupiter, but there are thousands just outside and all around the halo....
