Basically... This is simply looking like the easy way for someone who don't feel like building. Just buy it premade with SteamOS on it which is comparable to one of the console os's with more freedom and call it a day. All I care about at this point is to see the benefit SteamOS will bring to games if it does and the controller but then again why install SteamOS on an existing system when you can just boot up steam in BPM?
if people build one themselves they can set the price. the only problem is a miniITX case is hell if something goes wrong. i need to redo the thermal paste on my cooler but i have to take the whole build apart to access that and i don't feel like it so i'm sitting at a 4.0 Ghz overclock. if i go to 4.4 the whole thing shuts down under Prime95.

You're using the stock cooler right?? That's the only reason I'm not too keen on going fullblown mini itx because I wouldn't want to get stuck with a stock cooler in such a small case. After the cooler I installed in my build considerably dropped my temps there's no way I would settle for less. I do kind of want to get a smaller case though. This is how my setup looks.

The tower is pretty large. If I could minimize that into something that can fit into that bottom shelf space I'd be good. The top shelf is where my PS4 will be going. PS3 was there before and my 360 was on the bottom where the green thing is.

no a stock cooler likely wouldn't fit in my case with the power supply. i used this

this is how small it is. it just sits in a portion of the TV stand. excuse the mess i'm trying to organize my junk my parents made me pick up from their house.

The time has come! We are ready to begin shipping Steam Machines and Steam Controllers to the 300 selected beta participants. The machines are due to leave the factory on Friday!

Here are some photos from the production line.

The 300 selected beta testers are being notified today (at about 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time) that they’ll soon receive Steam hardware and SteamOS for testing. Each selected user is also being awarded a special badge on their Steam Community profile, indicating that they’re a beta participant. In addition, a number of games that run natively on SteamOS are being added to each selected user’s library.

We’ve had to make the difficult decision to limit our beta to the U.S. only, because of regulatory hurdles. This was not our original plan, and it means we can’t collect beta feedback from Steam customers world-wide, which is pretty unfortunate. All things considered, we’re sure it was the right decision, because the alternative was to delay the whole beta beyond the point when we’d be able to incorporate any feedback into the 2014 products. This decision only affects Valve’s 300 prototype units; the commercial versions of Steam Machines that are for sale in 2014 won’t be affected by this. More information on those will be announced at CES on January 6.

SteamOS will be made available when the prototype hardware ships. It will be downloadable by individual users and commercial OEMs. (But unless you’re an intrepid Linux hacker already, we’re going to recommend that you wait until later in 2014 to try it out.) We’ll post info soon about that. Oh, and stay tuned for the in-home streaming beta to begin soon, too!

Happy holidays. And happy unboxing to our beta testers. See you on Steam.

*crosses fingers*
