You know I've never seen anyone claim they are from Barbuda :ld:

Also as a Jamaican descendant and resident of one of the larger islands how is it being from the tiny islands? Is it a popular pastime to walk the entire island in a day?

Funny you mention Barbuda - when I told the people at the Antiguan consulate what my father's last name was, they assumed he was from Barbuda

I haven't heard of walking the island in a day, but it's small enough that it's SOMEWHAT in the realm of possibility

Are cars popular there? I would find it hilarious to be stuck in traffic in a place like that. Either way Antigua is one of my future destinations, along with st Vincent and Montserrat.

Yeah, they drive on the left side of the road down there, but I saw a few cars that were still built in the American fashion (steering wheel on the left) ... my dad told me that when people retire down there, they have their cars shipped down there :manny:

Its a legit question I was just pondering considering the small size of the country not to mention nothing is there worth invading or capturing. Antigua along with other islands GDP per capita hovers around $15,000 per yr. Oprah has a higher GDP than the entire country

tradition from England, part of the British Empire.. still part of the commonwealth of nations just like jamaica and the bahamas.
lot of wealthy folks and their yachts in the English Harbor area.

i once tried to ride a hotel bike from st. johns to nelson's dockyard..... i wasn't about that life(endurance) then. :snoop::noah:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Harbour

English Harbour is a natural harbour and settlement on the island of Antigua, in the extreme south of the island. The settlement takes its name from the nearby harbour in which the Royal Navy established its base of operations for the area during the eighteenth century. Its population is 759 (2001 Census).

English Harbour is a centre of boating, especially yachting. There are two sheltered deepwater harbours nearby; English Harbour itself and Falmouth Harbour.

English Harbour is best known for Nelson's Dockyard, which occupies the site of the British Navy base. It displays restored buildings and other historical artifacts from the colonial period of the dockyard, especially the time it was commanded by Horatio Nelson.

My grandfather is from Antigua, but my knowledge of the island and its culture is lamentable. Most of what I know comes from Jamaica Kincaid's writing. I'm hoping to finally make the trip out next year or the year after.

Former Prime Minister of Antigua Lester Bird had an embarrassing episode in front of a large crowd at the National Stadium in the island when his pants came tumbling off his waist just as he was making his way to be knighted. At first his bodyguards did not notice the falling pants but when they did, they hurriedly helped him pick it back up.
