I have had this harddrive in my deskstop for a bit less than 4 years. It is a seagate. Recently I noticed some clicking ,at random times, seems to be a bit predictable, start up for instance but mainly random. Iam also getting very quick freezes of around a second occasionally when I click google chrome to access the internet for instance , and longer ones for say 10 secs when I access certain websites where even the mouse cursor freezes , but only certain ones 2 national newssites for some reason and the website of a political party I belong to . The vast majority of websites don't do this. I can play games without any slow down. The red hard drive light ,doesn't seem to be overly on, just the same. The hard drive doesn't seem to be struggling, put it that way. When I click on windows say to use my computer,it loads files just as quickly. I can watch films on the computer without any stuttering.

I had a sudden hard drive failure those 4 years back without any warning signs that I picked up on so Iam rather paranoid now, so I have downloaded sea tools for windows which has tests specifcially to check the health of my hard drive . It passed all the tests listed, smart, short generic, and long generic etc etc. I have also used chckdisk and there are no bad sectors detected.

I just wondered if anything else can cause these problems , because it is such a hassle to sort out. ,the only thing that Iam a bit suspicious of, is the slow downs certainly, have become more noticeable since I updated my eset smart security to the latest version and also ever since I bought the computer I have had periods when flashplayer and google chrome seem to hate each other and cause the computer to freeze .

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

that 'clicking' is a bad sign. I had a similar problem with a seagate external that was dying. and similarly it managed to pass all tests, and seemed to work alright most of the time. but it did completely fail eventually

if nothing else, backup any important data now, while it's still semi-working

You ran "chkdsk /r" right?

It takes alot longer to complete than a regular chkdsk

I'm assuming it's a Win7/8 system so you should have an Automatic Defrag once a week.
