Or know somebody that has?

Im NOT talking talking about majors like Psychology, english or that shyt where you need a PHD to make the most out of your career.

Im talking about Engineering, Business, Finance, Accounting and stuff like that?

Where you forgo years of experience to move up the corp ladder to pursue research and teaching:leostare:

Half of the black people at my school are engineers pursuing a Phd (mechanical, aeronautical, chemical, etc.). One just came in this year after finishing his Master's at another school. He applied for jobs and a Phd program. He didn't get a job so he decided to come here for a Phd.

eta: a lot of them still plan to pursue industry jobs though.

half way through the md/phd program, phd in immunology. i like research and being the first one to discover things and read about new technology/findings. money won't be an issue at all for me when I vaccinate against HIV. I also have 0 debt (actually 10k from undergrad).

as far as the business fields, what they do is pretty cool and they really focus on truths and the academic side of things. you would be surprised at what some of those people make as young faculty since they get a lot of consulting and outsourced projects. Some of my undergrad professors created algorithms and databases for netflix/fandango/etc. Marketing post-docs can study evidence based mechanics in human behavior.

some people take the PhD and take it back to teaching and corporate world, that is not me but I understand that money and family is important to people.

i'm doing a masters in applied math right now still thinking if i should pursue a phd when i'm done but i doubt i would cause:
-as you mentioned, foregoing income for all those years
-from speaking to alot of people with both masters and phd's they all seem to end up in the same positions anyway in industry
-and as one person in finance told me as long as you're smart as a phd holder and can pickup the same things they can you might be in a better position than a phd cause they're looked upon as too rigid and academic

you know that most doctoral programs should provide full tuition, medical and stipend benefits right (if I'm correct)?

Engineers have the best damn stipends of all fields. Some of the engineers at my school are make like 100 to 200 less per month than what I was making as a salaried teacher.

I have my MPH

I teach right now as well as work in the health field and am considering going back to get my PhD in Health Policy, but I am deterred.

It's just that in certain fields such as mine, getting a PhD isn't lucrative. It's more so to teach and conduct research. The money is in applied knowledge (healthcare administration), and you can do that with a masters.
