This is revisonist history for sure, Chance was one the biggest rappers around regardless of how you personally feel about his music.
I think his gimmick just got kind of stale is all, maybe the first time you heard this nikka moan over a gospel type beat it was cool and refreshing but the 50th time probably not so much. I thought the earlier Vic Mensa stuff was much better at the time.
Chance had cool verses though, I also feel like the character in Atlanta that was clearly him kind of stained his rep a bit among his listener base too

I enjoyed Acid Rap but he was undeniably corny. He made successful after school program music. It kind of felt like people felt they were supposed to like him rather than actually liking himm.
