Here's my situation

I have a government job, been there for almost two years . About a month ago i got a new job, still in the government different position & different department. Reason I looked and got this job was so i could get more money, it pays about $10k more than what i previously making. I've been working at this new position for a week now (took 3 weeks to get me transferred from old spot to here) . Today my admin calls me into her office and tell's me that I will now be working in a governor appointed position. Its pretty much the same job I do now but for a particular sector , the reason I being so new am getting this and not someone else who has been there longer is because of my language skill (high level Spanish) . This new position does increase my workload slightly and increases my responsibility load A LOT, I will be getting a vehicle to travel around the state and having to fly out to conferences around the country. There was no mention of more pay.

One of my coworker already told me they don't think that the position pays any more money than anyone else, which i believe it, she said it very matter of factually almost as if it didn't deserve to get more (could hear the hate in her voice)

So anyways breh how should i go about this being that I've only been there for a week?, I attempted to ask for a raise in my first job and was told no, that our salaries are union negotiated so they had no control over it (another factor for me leaving), but this being a totally different department (with a larger budget) and being that this a governor appointed position how can i make a good argument for a raise?

Should i highlight my language skills? or the fact that I will now have more responsibility? or should i avoid it all together ?

I essentially told my upper management that I was offered better salary for a lateral move to another company. I highlighted my accomplishments on written record and told them I was aware that new responsibilities and work scope were being put on my plate , and wanted my salary to reflect that. They agreed and I will be promoted soon.

Don't wait for them to come to you. The "be a quiet and humble worker" thing only benefits the worker to a certain point, after that you're just fukking yourself. That doesn't mean you don't deserve dignity if you're the quite type, just to clarify.

Always understand that every single worker in America is underpaid, often deliberately so.

Yeah
Basically told my job how much I'm worth to the company and listed my abilities vs how much I'm actually getting compensated for.

Explained to them what I should be making based off of the state median (I exaggerated the numbers :lolbron: ) in my field.

A week later I got a raise and promotion.

Still not enough tho so I'm planning my escape :shaq:

This is exactly what i though to doing, was going to write it up over the weekend. My only hesitation though is that Ive only been doing my current job for a week, which if brought up I i was going to counter by offering them this: I am currently on a 6 month probation period (its not even a probation period in the traditional sense, but that doesn't matter) I'm going to propose to allow my quality of work (with all these new found responsibilities) dictate If 6 months from now I can get this raise I'm askingfor , which honestly am not even asking for a huge money, I want $5,000 a more year than what i make now.

I'd ride the probation period out before asking unless you feel very confident they aren't going to shank you for some dumb reason because you asked for a raise. They may agree with your future raise while actively looking to replace you, that's definitely a risk. I am not aware of how it is where you work.

If you decide on doing it, make sure you get it in writing.

what happened?
You should have waited the probation period out, in that time frame busted ass, increased your value THEN asked for a raise. You're the new guy who doesn't think he's making enough money....

Next time bring up the "money" when they start switching things up and adding more responsibilities otherwise at least make it out of your probationary period.

You got fired huh?

Depends on where you work.

But if you work at a govt/public organization, the pay scales are often set in stone so asking for a raise might be pointless. Private organizations, it varies. The job before the one I had now, worked almost three years with no raise because of a wage freeze (due to recession). Sucked but asking for a raise wouldn't work.

The place I work now has set pay scales...I go up one level on the pay scale per year and that's pretty much that unless I switch positions.

Na this was my mistake :snoop:

Reason I looked and got this job was so i could get more money, it pays about $10k more than what i previously making.

i was pretty happy where i was at , cool work environment/ co-workers and was very good and specialized at my job , but this whole "i need more money" thing came into my head, apart from a 36k student loan debt, am pretty good financially , no credit cards no other debits, money in the bank etc etc . So after being here for 2 and half months , this new job was not a good match for me , they've stacked a bunch of responsibility and expectation without the pay which at first i was cool with but now am not. Its been so bad that it has started to affect me mentally and physically, so much so its become noticeable and yea might be close to loosing my job if am not careful. I already hit up H.R though and asked for a transfer back to my previous department, they said it MIGHT be possible, so am waiting to hear from them.

Long story short, sometimes money isn't everything.

Yea no pay scales here, we get guaranteed yearly raises though , which are very low, this year its gonna be something like $0.30-$0.45, which is high its been half o that in previous yearly. Honestly this is learning experience for me like i just said in my previous post, its not good to jump on the money sometimes.

yeah it's a shyt lesson to learn sometimes. I got a manager where i'm at who i know wants to bring me over to her department would be roughly a 10% pay increase but the work life balance would get thrown all out of wack. Sometimes less money is more valuable....that being said they dangle 15% in front of me and i'll have to give it some thought:smile:

You have leverage given your language skill. If you didnt have that leverage they would not have chosen you over senior ppl.

HOWEVER...upon reading the first sentence of this post...as soon as I read government I figured you'd be hard pressed to demand more money. I would still do so though. I'm guessing there is an administrative process regarding the new position by which youll have to accept a formal offer and sign papers. Read over the documents and ask if the salary is negotiable because you think that given the new responsibilities and how your skills lend themselves to the job it is warranted. Be professional and have your reasons ready. thats all you can do
