How much of a pain was it to get all documents to reflect your name change? Did it take a long time for it to happen?

changing your name involves:

- getting a court order (if needed) or using a marriage/divorce decree,

- updating your Social Security card first, followed by your driver's license/state ID, passport,

- updating other documents like bank accounts, employer records, voter registration, etc., using certified copies of your legal name change document as proof at each step
all this makes sense, but damn :what:

Not that time consuming. People assume it's a lot harder than it actually is, but you have to realize we live in a society where most women change their names once or even twice in their lifetime. So the process is very streamlined. And during the whole process you can still legally use all of your old documents and cards as long as you carry the court order with you.

As a dude, I thought it would be harder than actually was because it was my first name but it was straight forward. But You can do the whole thing in about 3 months if you dont need a new passport. Or 6 months if you do. You can also still travel internationally using your old passport as long as you have your court order .

From a cost standpoint it cost me about 1200 to change everything , but cist is very relative to what your courts charge for it in your local area. About half of that was just legal fees paid to the court for seeing the judge, and for certified copies of the court order. The other half was the cost of replacing the ID, ,passport and the passport card. I was actually surprised the social security department didn't charge anything for it.

Banks were pretty straightforward too, and they didn't even need a new ID; just the court order to change credit and debit cards. The only annoying thing was that a lot of consumer accounts for subscriptions or memberships don't have the option to change your name online, so you'd have to call their line and explain yourself to indian representatives.

Finally your credit profile is going to look very weird. All the financial institutions are very good about changing your name, but they tend to be lazy about reporting it to the credit bureaus. So a few of your accounts are still going to have your old name. Others may have a fusion of both of them.

Also don't stress about the court date. The judge does not give a flying fck about what name you chose or why you chose it. He is just there to ensure you didnt pick an offensive name like Satanist Jones or Buttfukk McGee. :russ:

That cac @cheek100 ultimately attempted the process but was denied, as individuals with sex-offense convictions are barred from participating.

However, he can still explain the steps involved and what the process entails.

@cheek100 help breh out por favor!

Glad to help :salute:

Fees are going to be a very very dependent upon where you live cause the fees are local to your city court.

The fees for me were about 500 for just the court appearance and processing. The court charged $20 for certified copies. I purchased five and placed 2 in a safe deposit box.

I highly recommend getting as many of them as you can get to give yourself mobility. If you ever move from your region, you don't want to be in the awkward situation of having to fly across the country because your original (or your only copy) was damaged or lost. You have to return to the same courthouse to physically to get more in the future. And financial institutions and government offices will not accept your own photocopies because its a court order.

Generally speaking, once the name change is complete for ID, social, passport, and credit cards you will need the certified copies to connect you to previously filed tax reports, bank statements , old medical records, or connect you to old documents from school like college/highschool transcripts.

Also let me add that in addition to variability in court fees and individual state ID cost, your price may actually be $150 less than mine because I had two get two passport books at the time because I was traveling to two countries which didn't like each other. In those circumstances you pretty much have to buy two so that the visa stamps arent visible to both countries.

This is common in situations in Eastern Europe , South East Asia , and the Middle East. For eexample, if you're ever trying to go to Israel but all the countries in the vicinity hate Israel. In my particular circumstance Turkey and Egypt had some weird beef with eachother and I needed to travel to both of them. So I had to pay the name change fee twice.
