I wont compare the quality of movies theyve been in. Ill simply say Leo has not had an acting performance on the Lamotta or Travis Bickle level, not even close really

I see what's being done here. Because the troll thread of Leo been thrown to the bushes and set ablaze, now y'all want to create a thread PURPOSELY overrating Leo's acting chops by pinning him with an already proven, already Oscar-winner, universally legendary actor. All of that just to prove a lame ass point to the previous thread. I see through this BS.

Until Leo done 40-plus years worth of films, it is no comparison nor need to be one. DiCaprio is the best doing it RIGHT NOW. DeNiro was the best doing it BACK THEN. There's nothing else to discuss.

I WILL however add, that it was DeNiro that passed the torch to DiCaprio by telling Sorcese to do work with the dude, Sorcese made more bigger hits, got his 1st and only director win and 1st and only best picture with DiCaprio. That's something that he never was able to do with DeNiro. You can take that for a grain of salt, but remember this, just like DeNiro was responsible for boosting Sorcese into legendary status, it was DiCaprio that reinvigorated Sorcese's career with much larger success.

He's a good actor and he's probably the best "natural" actor out of all the cats today who are respected for their movies but didn't come up studying acting or never doing stage (The Pitt's, Depps, etc). I don't think any of his performances match De Niro's in his prime... He just doesn't have the range, subtlety, intensity, etc... that De Niro in his prime had. IMO The actor from the same generation as Leo that is closest in comparison is Bale...

A better comparison would be to Jack Nicholson... a solid actor with a bunch of great/classic movies in his filmography.

You people are drunk on hype. DiCaprio is the better actor; De Niro simply can't do this. He lacks Leo's technical range (let's see De Niro do a south African accent) and emotional intensity (let's see De Niro explode with the savagery Leo unleashed in Revolutionary Road). Leo is the most gifted American actor born after Al Pacino, and I'm not excluding Denzel or PSH. Those two are more consistent than Leo, but his peak form basically has no limits. It's like Oldman with star charisma. Unfortunately, Leo's only caught fire in a handful of films.

De Niro has been great at times, and is a superb and natural comic actor, but he's the most overrated male dramatic actor in cinema history.
