Is it just me or has WuTang's legacy been ruined by the proliferation of their merchandise? Like, anyone I see repping WuTang gear does so in a very... "Williamsburg" sorta way. A little piece of my soul dies. I mean, whenever I think of WuTang now the first thing that comes to mind is:

Even Sacha Boron Cohen used to make fun of this phenomenon with his character Ali G:

I dunno... I like WuTang, very familiar with their work, recognize them as legends, I love what they've done for my ears with their music, but anytime I see them repped publicly it's always by lames that have NOTHING to do with rap at all. Anyone else notice that? Is it because of the merch or it something else?

What a stupid question. Im not trying to clown but that would be saying because white people buy the records and attend the most concerts then said artist or groups brand would be on the decline. Hip Hop is for everbody

It goes both ways. Younger people wear it now because it's retro and cool but probably don't really know about it.

But the same goes for those that wear Led Zepplin T-Shirts, so it's also a compliment because they've attained that "classic" status.

EDIT example Shania Twain with a Ramones shirt:

I feel that stance, but I dunno... something about it is more visceral. I mean, I actually LIKE what the WuTang Clan has put out over the years. I used to bump Ghostface's 2000s releases damn near non stop back in the day (I'm only 25 so I'm not going to front like I was bumping their 90s work when it was new.) But it's not like I can walk up to someone wearing their gear and have a great conversation about Fish Scale, OBCL2, etc. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Instead of feeling like I can relate to someone that brings up WuTang or reps their gear I feel like I can't, like from the jump. I mean, they might as well be wearing a Nirvana shirt at that point.
