Breh, I know this thread is two years stale but have you heard from folks down there? Are they going to stay with Sarasota given the fukk shyt going on in FL or do they think they can ride it out. I honestly can't think of where else they would go for the same climate and property appreciation.
I'm assuming because this is a second, third, or fourth home market for a lot of folks, that they're not giving it much thought because it's not their primary place of residence.
I can't speak for everyone else, but to be honest with you bro, my aunt and uncle (RIP) and their kids, they weren't really race conscious people. They were very comfortable around white people, which is why they bought in Vineyard Haven and not in Oak Bluffs. People would mistaken them for Hawaiian and they didn't check people on it so I'm sure there were a few incidences where they may have even passed as such.
They were a bit eccentric anyhow. Their son whose in the Sarasota house, who I haven't spoken to in about a year, was an engineer who quit his job in his 30's influenced by his white trust fund friends and hasn't been employed since. He was living off of his parents money for about ten years then they cut him off. He wouldn't go back to work and was homeless for many years, going from one friend's couch to another. Then they cut him off and he was on the streets.
So my assumption is that he doesn't care. He living in a paid off million dollar water front property.
For the other black folks that came down from the Vineyard, I don't really know. It seems like, from the article that you posted, that many of them have made some significant investments into the local black Sarasota community. To me, I would view that as a sign of them being long-term minded, and with that in mind, can't see many of them just forsaking their investments into the community because of state politics.
Many probably have a wait and see mentality. Desantis won't be governor forever.
