Having "young players on the same timeline" is overrated. You need veterans on your team

I have no idea when this myth became a thing, maybe 10 years ago. It was obvious and a normal thing to always have veterans on your team to help with the young guys. That's literally what the Veteran's minimum was there for. Another coach on the floor, an adult in the room, etc etc

I see so much online or on podcasts, "Well so and so player don't fit the timeline of this team". So what? Do you want a team full of 21 year olds who lose year after year as the 11th seed, or do you actually want to start winning games?

- Houston Rockets were lottery bound until Steven Adams and Van Vleet came to the team
- Thunder added Caruso and Hartenstein, and look what happened
- Celtics were playoff pretenders until they added Horford and Kyrie
- Pistons broke records for losing streaks until they got Schroeder, Beasley, Hardaway Jr

Can't keep tanking and crossing your fingers. Especially how rigged the NBA Draft is nowadays. Spurs were on that BS until they finally woke up a year ago that they need veterans

Take big swings by getting veterans and try to win and make the playoffs. Wizards, Hornets, Jazz, Nets, you're on the clock

I can easily point to teams who added veterans and didn't do shyt.

You also need an older player who's willing to take that role. A lot of vets just wanna hoop and cash the check.

The Wizards aren't getting significantly better by adding some past it vet on the end of their bench.

Having "young players on the same timeline" essentially allows for the GM to not have to take accountability or worry about ACTUALLY winning a title or those type of expectations, you can just keep re-upping on young talent and draft picks. See: Presti.

He mentioned "veteran minimum" :comeon:

I didn't even get into his horrible examples

It's just a claim that's very hard to prove. If you have the right players at the right time, you win. There's not just one way of becoming a title challenging team.

So the Houston Rockets had a chance at the #2 seed in the Western Conference before Steven Adams and Van Vleet came along?

So Thunder were sure fire championship contenders before Caruso and Hartenstein came on the team?

Interesting

And the Cavs were the #1 seed this season. What's your point?

The argument that the OP is putting forward doesn't make any sense.

When it's debated that x-player doesn't fit the timeline of the team, it's typically about a player whom is counterproductive to helping the team. Vets that can help the team, and not handicap their salary cap or direction the team is going in, aren't looked at in that light.

I don't know why the OP would even mention the Spurs for waking up and getting vets as if they didn't just draft a generational superstar in 2023.

It's all about having the appropriate balance.

I don't think that's ever been in question.
