On Saturday a new floating nuclear power plant left St. Petersburg, Russia, towed by two boats. The two-reactor, 70MW floating power plant is headed through the Baltic Sea and north around Norway, to a Russian town called Murmansk, where the boat will receive its fuel.

After a period of time in Murmansk, the power plant will be towed to a small Arctic town called Pevek, according to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. The floating nuclear power plant, called the Akademik Lomonosov, doesn't have any of its own propulsion hardware, so being slowly towed to its destination is a necessity. The company that built the plant, state-owned Rosatom Corporation, said in a press release that the second stage of the journey, from Murmansk to Pevek, will commence in 2019, with fuel and crew aboard the boat/power plant.

We already have dozens of these floating in the oceans. They're called nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. They're probably more dangerous since they're also carrying millions of pounds of missiles/explosives etc, and because they're military targets there's always the possibility they are attacked/sunk.

Yeah, but this is basically a rusty barge, hopefully there won't be any extreme weather events thrown at it. Russia isn't exactly known for their workmanship, think about how many of their subs have been destroyed.

On the other hand maybe it's simplicity (just a rusty barge) is a good thing. Much harder to fuk that up, even if you have poor worksmanship, than a nuclear powered sub! Kinda fukked up that we have to think in those terms :francis:

Couple practical differences:

1. Ours, Russian, British, Chinese, etc...nuclear powered subs and ships are all self propelled and can potentially navigate itself away from causing harm while this floating powerhouse relies on tugboats.

2. There hasn't been much information released about the reactors on board, on one hand we could take that to mean they're like any other reactors on a water based ship but all other water based ships have hulls that upon direct impact or tear won't immediately danger the reactor while this ship does not.

@Hawaiian Punch any thoughts on this :patrice:

Well here’s the thing, when you have a nuclear meltdown the first thing you are trying to do is pump water into the core to keep the rods from overheating. If the rods fell in the ocean would that help? Maybe...or maybe the resulting fallout would destroy the ocean and kill us all.

The fact that man creates these scenarios for the earth to deal with truly show what an aberration we are.
