Sugar was smarter, that interview reminds me of Tommy Davidson's version of SLR.... " he looked like a giant Milk Dud, except this Milk Dud had arms and was jabbin' ........"
lol

Hagler gave way too much to Sugar Ray in negotiations... The bigger ring, the 12 ounce gloves, 12 rounds instead of 15...even with all that I still think Marvin won that fight.

Well the only thing he wanted was to fight SRL and SRL was the bigger draw

Marvin didn't give up all that stuff just to get the fight with Ray, he was given a bigger share of the purse in exchange for Ray getting everything he wanted.

he fought him at end of his career but ray at 160 was the best man he ever fought at middleweight and ray is no middleweight. hagler might have beat ray here but he had a lot of problems against him stylistically. hagler never fought a true all time great middleweight and middleweights like joey giardello fought and beat much better fighters at 160 like dikk tiger and rubin hurricane carter but nobody ever talks about middleweights like that. hagler would never beat monzon and the problems with the jab and movement and size he had against a middleweight ray leonard tells me that. he also had issues against duran and that was a very close fight. duran is another fighter who doesnt belong at middleweight and would get killed by the top middleweights of history. hagler is a guy who like duran benefits from hindisght and nostalgia because he looked and fought the way you want a fighter to look people liked duran because he looked white and hagler because he was that tough guy hard worker with a trademark the bald head they just looked like they could fight and they got a little hero worship from that. hopkins at 160 is another fighter who gets that hero worship credit hes his own hypeman and everyone just accepts it and gives him credit despite not doing anything substantial at the weight

I wholeheartedly disagree and I'm shocked at the way you're trying to downplay their accomplishments. But I'd rather let the fight tapes of Hagler and Hopkins tell the story and then others can decide whether or not they really were that good.

they were good. hagler beat some very good fighters but no greats at 160. hopkins in particular overrated by hindsight and hero worship his greatest accomplishment was losing to roy jones the wins over trinidad and de la hoya are fights that middleweights like jones jr would have feasted on he puts both of those welterweights in the dirt. toney has some losses but in my view he beats everyone hager fought, can you say the same for hagler against everyone toney fought: jones jr, mike mccallum, michael nunn, etc? that was a much harder campaign at 160. theres some hero worship going on with hagler but no one wants to say it

I swear to God that I sometimes just have to shake my head when reading the absolute nonsense that way too many dudes post in this forum in some odd desire to try and come off sounding like they are boxing historians.
