Hennessey is apparently confident its new F5 Venom will handily surpass the elusive 300-mph benchmark.
The company has built a 7.6-liter twin-turbo V8 that is designed to deliver 1,600 horsepower and 1,300 pound-feet of torque. The car also benefits from a relatively low drag coefficient and weight.
"Currently our CFD testing and our engineers tell us we need about 1,520 horsepower to break 300," CEO John Hennessey told Motor Authority. "I'd like to run 500 kph. Which is 311 [mph] and change."
The company has already pushed the engine past 2,000 ponies on a bench dyno, providing a margin to help achieve the goal, though maybe not with the initial 1,600-horsepower build and standard aerodynamic configuration.
"After we break 300 we'll see how much faster we can go," Hennessey added.
The company will only build 24 examples of the prospective record-setting car.
