David vs. the Disney Dud: Underdog Shines but Can’t Topple the Avatar Goliath: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 19-21)

Avatar is not quite the monster that it used to be with Fire and Ash "only" opening with $88M. That's $46.1M less than The Way of Water's $134.1M opening in 2022. That's a steep 34% drop. :picard: After back to back smash hits, we're not in Pandora anymore. :wow:

But, on the plus side, for Disney, Fire and Ash's $88M opening is more than Snow White's entire $87.2M theatrical gross. Not all Disney duds are created equal.

Here Comes Ava Claus, Here Come Ava Claus, Right Down Fire and Ash Lane: Weekend Box Office Results (Dec. 26-28)

Avatar: Fire and Ash wasn't down for long. After a subpar opening, it bounced back in a big way with a $24M Christmas Day and $64M second weekend. It's the 8th best Christmas Day - ahead of Avatar's $23M - but behind Avatar: The Way of Water's $29.1M, which is the 4th best Christmas Day ever. The Avatar franchise dominates on Christmas.

That franchise Christmas domination is great. What is not great is Fire and Ash's overall performance. Its $217.6M 10-day total is $43.4M behind The Way of Water's $261M. The Way of Water was at $216.9M on its 8th day in theaters. That makes Fire and Ice -16.6% off of The Way of Water's pace. Returns are gargantuan but returns are diminishing.

How bout Zootopia 2 storming back into 2nd place in its 5th weekend with $20M? :ehh: Thank God for The New Day. And thank God for Christmas vacation. Its $321.3M running total makes it the 6th highest grossing movie of 2025. It's just under $10M behind Wicked: For Good's $331.6M.

We got newcomer Marty Supreme, which had its wide opening on Christmas Eve. It had a $15.5M Weekend and $27.4M 5-days. I don't fukk with Chalamet or A24 like that, despite the buzz. :yeshrug: That being said, the $27.4M 5-day total beat last Christmas' A Complete Unknown's $23.2M. So Chalemet one-upped himself this Christmas, where he has become a staple.

After a $9.1M Christmas Day opening, Paul Rudd and Jack Black's Anaconda made $14.5M over the weekend, for a $23.6M total. It was upstaged by Sydney Sweeney's holdover The Housemaid, which, in its second weekend, put up $15.4M. That brings its total to $46.4M, which is Sweeney's second highest grossing movie as a leading actress, passing Madame Web's $43.8M. :mjlol: Look at that - a Sydney Sweeney movie that people have actually gone to the movies to see. :ehh: I wonder why.
