No, I never really did get into those types of games back then. Like I said, I've never really been the type of person that's interested in a story while playing a game. I can't think of many games I have played through that I really enjoyed the story. Maybe I'm limited in the types of games I enjoy but I recently picked up The Puppeteer because I heard it was a good platformer. And it is, but even that game has a ton of uninteresting cut scenes, I skip them all the time but it's just annoying to me that I have to go through that process. I almost wish there was a "gameplay mode" where I could skip cutscenes automatically.
Yea, I'd say you're just limiting yourself right now. Depending on the type of game I may not care for the story but some games a good story is imperative e.g. action-adventure, role playing, and variants of those genres. FPS, platformer and fighting games don't really need stories for me to enjoy.

Gunstar Heroes or Vector Man for the Genesis bruh! If you're a fan of platformers you should know those classics. Comix Zone is definitely up there too.
