High school shooting plot foiled in Northern California, authorities say

A day before a gunman in Oregon killed eight classmates and his college writing teacher, Tuolomne County sheriff's detectives foiled a plot by students to go on a shooting rampage at their high school near Yosemite National Park, authorities said.

The Summerville Union High School students, all male, had detailed plans that “included names of would-be victims, locations, methods in which the plan was to be carried out,” Sheriff Jim Mele told reporters at a news conference Saturday. The targets included other students and faculty members.

The boys confessed, Mele said, according to the Modesto Bee and KCRA-TV Channel 3. Three were arrested Wednesday and a fourth detained Friday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit assault with deadly weapons, a statement provided by the sheriff’s office said.

“They were going to come on campus and shoot and kill as many people as possible at the campus,” Mele told the Bee.

The suspects were overheard by other students talking about their plans. Detectives later found evidence that the suspects planned to act during an upcoming campus event, the news organizations reported.

“Students noticed suspicious activity, and … they felt uneasy enough to go to staff,” the sheriff said in televised remarks.

The names of the suspects were not released because they are juveniles.

No weapons were found by detectives, but the students were planning to obtain them, the news organizations reported. No specific motive was disclosed.

The high school serves students in Tuolumne, about three hours east of San Francisco.

With a population of fewer than 2,000 people, Tuolumne's heyday was during the Gold Rush era, and it later became known for logging operations. Tuolumne is now home to the Black Oak Casino, operated by the Tuolumne band of Me-Wuk Indians, a federally recognized tribe.

went on a killing rampage that left six UC Santa Barbara students dead. Rodger then shot himself inside his car after exchanging gunfire with deputies.

A year earlier, John Zawahri, 23, killed five people in a shooting rampage through Santa Monica that ended at Santa Monica College campus. Zawahri was killed by police.

And in 2012, One L. Goh, 43, fatally shot seven people at a small nursing vocational school in Oakland. Goh surrendered to police.

:wow: I just looked up how crazy that smc shooting was:
The California Highway Patrol received a phone call at 11:52 a.m PDT on June 7, 2013 of shots fired.[7] Upon arrival, police called the fire department when they saw a house on fire, located at 2036 Yorkshire Avenue, where Zawahri lived. After the fire was under control, the bodies of two men were found in the house, both having died from gunshot wounds.[8]

Shooting spree
After setting fire to the house, Zawahri, armed with an AR-15-type semiautomatic rifle that he machined himself from aluminum, stopped a woman driving a Mazda hatchback, holding her at gunpoint. A passing female driver tried to intervene and was shot and wounded by the gunman.[9] He then ordered the driver of the first car, a 41-year-old woman, to drive him to the Santa Monica College campus.[4] Along the way, Zawahri shot at city bus 4057 of Big Blue Bus, which was carrying approximately two dozen passengers; three of them suffered injuries.[10] A police cruiser was also fired upon. Upon arriving on the college campus, Zawahri shot into a Ford Explorer, killing the 68-year-old male driver and critically wounding the passenger, the driver's 26-year-old daughter who died two days later.[11][12][dead link]

He then continued on foot toward the college library, fatally shooting another woman immediately outside.[4][13] Entering the library, Zawahri opened fire on students inside, then focused his gunfire on a group of library employees barricaded in a storage room.[10] Witnesses stated they heard gunshots and screams, but were able to hide or escape unharmed.[4][14][15] While on the campus, he fired at least 70 rounds and dropped a duffel bag loaded with ammunition magazines, boxes of bullets, and a .44 revolver.[11]

When police arrived at the college, they exchanged gunfire with Zawahri. He was fatally shot by officers inside the library and then brought outside where he died.[16] Authorities investigated up to nine crime scenes believed to be tied to the thirteen-minute-long shooting spree.[9][17] Though Zawahri had been killed, officers actively searched the college campus for additional shooters and victims for over eight hours.[10]
