Thought this was a good review that looks at how the movie pertains to class consciousness and Spike now identifying with the black “elite”. Some good comments as well.

This is trash? but Mel Gibson’s Ransom which is essentially the same movie is regarded as a classic?

Y’all are a bunch of clowns

Ransom is fukking brilliant. Let’s relax

1- Gary Sinise vs ASAP Rocky

2- Sometimes less is more. Spike’s quirky approach can work but sometimes it can make for a weird movie. After watching this the movie that came to mind in that regard is Chiraq. Where it’s like damn Spike, this is a good premise but why’d you do all this extra shyt

So I finally saw this, all I got to say is Denzel elevated this film.

This movie was mid.

ETA: Read through the comments and I am glad that some feel the same way.

A teenage boy is not going to have art work of Kamala? Come on.

For real though, I wonder whose art work that is? I feel like that must be from Spike Lee's collection.

I didn't see that......I have to run the movie back.

As I've said before, this isn't one of Spike's best movies but saying Highest 2 Lowest is on the levels of a Tyler Perry movie is on some extreme blasphemous levels I would rather watch Highest 2 Lowest for the rest of my life than watch ten minutes of Tyler Perry's Straw movie again.

Spike has NEVER made a movie as bad a Straw.
This movie felt like they shot a comedy but tried to edit it to be a serious drama. The whole movie felt cheesy and poorly acted. I think TP would’ve done a better job and I hate that nikka

Spike is supposed to be a respected legend in film but this movie felt like it was made by his less talented son or something.
This movie could have been dope but Spike aint got it no more. And that wack ass music did not fit the mood of the movie made me want to mute it. Script was mid af but Denzel was good. Wasted a good performance on this.
The music was so bad and awkward like none of it fit. This was supposed to be suspense but that dumb ass music was for a comedy or something.

We need to roll out the flat top for spike. He need to stick to being a knicks super fan because he is beyond washed.
I can’t believe a film directed by Spike and staring Denzel was straight :trash:

Literally a “fukk you, pay me” style of film.
A waste of Denzel, he been in some bad movies the past 5 years other than equalizer.

I’m a say spike Lee is overrated, he ain’t been good since Patrick Ewing was an all star. I can’t remember the last movie he made that I liked

:stopitslime:Clockers, Malcom X, Do The Right Thing, Mo Better Blues, Crooklyn, He Got Game, Inside Man are all great films.
He got game and inside man were good but not great. Them other movies did not age well, Malcom X was good for its time but it’s not an all time great. Them other movies are cult classics but nothing special
Great? :jbhmm:Malcolm X is certified top 10 film all time which is a tremendous accomplishment but the rest range from good to ok. He Got Game is not a great film by any stretch. Denzel is great but Ray Allen and the overall story is ass.

Either way most of these movies are 30 years old or more. The premises of his films like miracle of St. Anna and the Vietnam movie write themselves but he still comes up short.

I argue with my pops on this who watches all his stuff religiously but it just don’t hit for me. Even Do The Right Thing feels quaint in the Trump era.

Tho his civil war pseudo-documentary was great.
Yea dude has more misses than hits and it’s been a minute since he had a hit. I’m not watching black klansmen that shyt don’t interest me in the least bit.

The fact remains, Denzel hasn’t been hot for a minute and the 1-2 notable performances he’s had over the last 15+ years is telling. Perhaps he needs something worthwhile to revitalize his career or perhaps he just doesn’t have it in him anymore.

:manny:
Equalizer franchise was a hit though and the last one just came out in 2023.

I'm in my late 30s and this movie felt washed. It felt like what someone in their 50s thought was cool after consulting someone my age who was already washed.

Ice Spice cameo was pointless. Wife is attractive but can't act. The whole scene where the son is recovered is terrible because she sounds like she is just reading quotes off of an after-school special. ASAP Rocky hasn't been relevant for +10 years and so his casting only works if he's a good actor (note: he isn't). He only has one emotion in the whole movie of anger and he doesn't have the nuance to pull it off in a convincing way.

I can go on, but what's the point. Too much virtue signaling w/ expensive cars, NYC penthouses and cartier bracelets, but lacking real substance. Having a full blown conversation with the guy who kidnapped/threatened to murder your son and owes you 17.5 mil is silly. In what world is a rapper in an abandoned building with a recording studio, let alone not having an entourage with him? The terrible conversation in the booth is cringe AF and don't even get me started on having music videos and artists perform in the middle of the movie.

Spike Lee after like 2010 is basically Jordan w/ the Wizards status.

I hate to be that guy but the original teaser was exciting to see but the trailer ultimately told us that it wasn’t going to be a good story.
