U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday at two campaign stops in Iowa that she would like to raise the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour from the current $7.25.

Clinton has said repeatedly she wants to raise wages for working Americans, including by raising the minimum hourly wage, but she has rarely named a specific figure.

"I want to raise the federal minimum wage to $12, and encourage other communities to go even higher," Clinton told a campaign event in Coralville, Iowa.

"I think we can manage it, and I don't think there should be any unintended consequences to job creation," Clinton said at another campaign stop at Grinnell College.

Many U.S. cities and municipalities have established a higher minimum wage than the federal rate. Bernie Sanders, who is Clinton's chief challenger for the Democratic Party nomination for the 2016 presidential election, has said the federal minimum wage should be raised to $15 an hour.

"I'm more comfortable saying let's get to $12," Clinton said at Grinnell, "in a reasonable, expeditious way."

Clinton is playing the smart political campaign game...most anti-minimum wage increase people immediately balk at a jump from $7.50 to $15 but aren't as put off by a jump from $7.50 to $12.
It plays to the limited thinking of the more conservative low IQ electorate that are easier to get fired up over the minimum wage because they are more easily outraged by the concept of doubling the minimum wage and that simple slogan can be used to get them worked up..."Them liberals want to double the minimum wage!!!" but its harder to do a bumper sticker slogan for a $4.50 increase.

15/hr for ppl with no education or skills?
Then why work hard and study??????

So stupid!!!
15 bucks an hr is 31k a yr
I know DBAs who make 35k and they just got a Bachelors in comp Sci.

Reduce the gap between low income and upper class
But all so lazy workers with hard workers

This sounds more like an indictment of the labor market than a reason to not raise the minimum wage.

i think that if you cant afford to pay your workers 10 dollars an hour, i dont give a fukk if you're in business or not. and you probably wont be for long, anyway

make it nationally 10 dollars and let states decide on the rest

It works psychologically. $12 is also far more feasible than $15. I think it settles in the $10-11 range when all is said and done.

Anyway, how does this help the middle class?
