keep it a brick i'm always a little bit uncomfortable with the real hip hop label. maybe because i notice that dope artists like UGK, Three Six, Do Or Die, Twista & Killa Cam are never really put in that category. kind of a regional thing but mostly a sub genre thing. like for instance Mystikal & Jay Elec from the same city but only one gets classified as real hip hop and yall know who

anyway i LOVE The Roots b i ain't even gon hold you:lawd:

Black Thought is fukking amazing, but The Roots as a whole aren't very interesting, and that's okay. Just because they're seen as honoring the arts and the culture doesn't mean enjoying them is mandatory. It's a lot of rappers I'd rather listen to that nobody would ever put in that "real hip hop" category. Doesn't mean you shouldn't respect them or draw distinction when necessary.

If alternative is a synonym for real.
Nah but jokes aside, The Roots is one of the best groups ever and Black thought one of the tightest emcees of all times.

As far as "real hiphop" goes, it's one of the weakest defined terms in this genre. Some would call The Roots alternative hiphop or early on Jazz hiphop. Indicating that it's not pure, but what is pure?

If you wanna get into The Roots and you're not used to listening to older hiphop, I would start with Things fall apart, Game Theory, Phrenology, to get warmed up, then Illadelph and Do you want more cause they might be harder to digest.
