Is it okay to dig in the crates and chop older Hip Hop to make new, or does this violate the "honor amongst pirates" doctrine (assuming the record you sample is itself the product of samples)?

I have been straight jacking old stuff like I Need Love (don't think there's any sample in the OG), UNITY, It Takes Two, and just yesterday Whoomp There It Is (? OG could be a keyboard beat... too lazy to research).

Is there anything off limits?

nah shyt it just biting to me. I mean, some artists were/are able to pull it off, but most just come off like the rappers cover of the song they Sampled

Thats just my 2 cents

Dudes were stealin' EPMD's drums like crazy in the early 90's. Erick used to always speak about that.

Hip Hop was built on sampling from others. So the rules have always been kinda foggy on whether it's cool to lift a little something from your peers.

I don't think it matters as long as the beat is creative
and a lot of drumkits on the net are straight sampled from Hip-Hop songs

That was whack though. Straight jack. The beatnuts were pissed about that one.

But hey, as long as its original and you flip it right, you can do whatever. That's really it. Originality and it has to sound good, be a new version or improvement on the other track.

Back in the day some producers were sampling R&B type beats that weren't even a couple of years old. 2 examples right here:

This joint sampled an recent R&B beat at the time, I don't have the time to look for the sample but if you look it up you will find it.

And Erik Sermon himself sampled a Ray J joint for this Redman track:
