The closer comparison would be comparing tea partiers to the progressive left.
And even with that said I wouldn't say the Dems completely destroyed them because ideas such as universal healthcare and free college are as popular as they have ever been since they are the new litmus test for candidates

Democrats are all progressives. Really, all Americans are progressives but only if we care about actual definitions.
You might have meant to compare Libertarians to Socialists, but even that would be wrong because Libertarians still suck it up and vote republican. Socialists would rather virtue signal on social media.

lmao hell no. Outside of economic theory libertarians do not hold much weight in the GOP. But that influence is decreasing as protectionist driven traditionalists push back on libertarian economics.

Yeah, they destroyed Bernie Sanders not the policies. The way things are going I think we will get a lot of what we want sooner rather than later. When the effects of the covid stimulus truly hit the entire public, they are going to try and pass some of this stuff to try and satisfy the masses.
Progressives havent got that 3rd party wake up call, they still believe the establishment will let them win...

I think they have but they are interested in winning elections so trying to take the Dem party from them is a short cut. Libertarians would reason that there is plenty of opportunity in the "Free Market" for these people to "uplift" themselves (aka bullshyt) and that if they die as a result of their inability to uplift themselves, then it is what it is.
Realistically, they are the shrug your shoulders and let me do what I want wing of the GOP...they just don't like being reminded of it because the GOP is a hotbed of racism, closeted homophobia, and religious zealots
