(Reuters) - State and local police in the United States will no longer be able to use federal laws to justify seizing property without evidence of a crime, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said on Friday.

The practice of local police taking property, including cash and cars, from people that they stop, and of handing it over to federal authorities, became common during the country's war on drugs in the 1980s.

Holder cited "safeguarding civil liberties" as a reason for the change in policy.

The order directs federal agencies who have collected property during such seizures to withdraw their participation, except if the items collected could endanger the public, as in the case of firearms.

Holder said the ban was the first step in a comprehensive review the Justice Department has launched of the program.

:ohhh::wow:

Good. One of the biggest reasons people don't respect police is due to them having broad authority to steal whatever they want from you.

Obama and Holder going out with a bang :mjcry:

this is so awesome man, I read a long piece on this and how it has ruined people's lives. One of the stories was this asian dude was traveling to open a new restaurant and he brought his money in cash. The cops just said they didn't believe him, took all his money and made him fight to get it back in court. He lost his new restaurant cuz he couldn't pay the bills and it fukked him up really bad financially.

it made me rage

I've had a cop steal a watch from me. He pulled me over and was staring at my watch. He kept asking all sort of strange questions and asked me to produce a receipt for the watch. I didn't have the receipt since I bought it years ago. He just took it from me under the assumption that I had stolen it. People don't understand why I would want to leave NYC.
