New York may be famous abroad for glitz, glamor and Park Avenue billionaires but America's biggest city has passed a grim milestone -- a record 60,000 people are homeless.

In November, there were 60,352 homeless people in the city, including 25,000 children, up more than 10 percent on the 53,615 who were homeless in January 2014, according to the website for charity Coalition for the Homeless.

Patrick Markee, deputy executive director for Advocacy Coalition for the Homeless, said the "historic homelessness crisis" in New York had worsened since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office in 2014.

He blamed the city's acute housing affordability crisis, policies of previous mayor Michael Bloomberg and failures in restoring permanent housing assistance for homeless families and children.

On Tuesday in his state of the city address, de Blasio made affordable housing a key promise of his administration in 2015.

"We commit to ending chronic veterans homelessness by the end of this year. Those who fight to protect our freedom abroad should never be left without a home," he said.

He also promised 10,000 affordable housing units for the elderly -- who "deserve to retire in dignity" and people on fixed incomes with little recourse when housing costs go up."

I'd imagine the biggest jump would be in Brooklyn. My mom moved out of the apartment where I grew up for 20 years in 2007. Her rent at the time for a huge pre-war 3 bedroom was $950. . . That same apt today is around $3300. . .

25k homeless children? I gotta admit that's kinda shocking.

What's the standard for homeless though? Is it just not having your family officially own or rent a home, or is it legit street, shelter , living in your car type conditions?

:ahh: Capitalism, where "demand" = how many dollars you have, not the demands of human needs.

Profit over people is the American way

Yet people's solution to all of this is more government.

Jeez how bad does it have to get before you people realize that the government is the problem?

60 out of 8.5 million is pretty good. I don't believe this bull shyt about there being 25k in children tho..when is the last time you seen a loose kid running around? So is there also 25k at least parents homeless too. So then are the remaining 10k the homeless drug addicts or mentally ill, or just lazy?

It's way more than 60K if you factor in everyone that lost their apartments and needed to move back with family members.

Some people need to wake up and leave New York if the situation is not working for you. It just makes no sense to work 60-80 hours a week and raise a family as well. MOVE
