I wonder what the legal ramifications of just shooting a bullet into the air as a way to scare the thieves away?

As a sidenote, this is why I pay for a mailbox service for more important/expensive packages

Illegal discharge. First time is a misdemeanor, If that was his second or more, felony

Negligent discharge, could be aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, manslaughter, reckless endangerment.

Bullets don't just dissipate. If you shoot up in the air you gotta pray it doesn't hit anyone or anything. What goes up, must come down. You shooting into the air and it's going up and over, into someone's baby's room.

If you have to pull the trigger just abide by the 4 rules of firearm safety

Never pull the trigger unless you intend to destroy your target, know what's in front of, behind and to the side of your target.
