Honestly, who cares about game preservation?

Microsoft aren’t even bothering to put actual data on disc anymore. The paid single player campaign only acts as digital DLC to multiplayer :francis:

Halo Infinite's campaign actually weighs in at around 25GB, with its multiplayer portion around another 4GB - though these values vary depending which pieces of Halo Infinite you may have already, and what you're now looking to install.

There's currently no way of installing the campaign without multiplayer - which tallies with how the game's campaign is listed as £49.99 DLC on Steam.

And since the game treats the campaign as DLC, the idea of having a disc for the game at all is rather muddled. How do you sell a physical copy of a free-to-play game when what you're really paying for is more of an add-on? With great difficulty.

Microsoft gaming chief calls for industry-wide game preservation

And what does this have to do with the thread?

You play it for free because they are allowing you to. If they ever shut down the FREE multiplayer the single player goes with it, disc or no disc

Worrying about persevering Halo is probably the last thing anyone has to worry about being preserved.

It'll be here as long as Xbox is here at the very least.

Worrying about preservation of a free to play game or even a game that's provided to you via a sub service is like worrying about the preservation of Fortnite or Apex legends.

The single player campaign is not free to play, its sold separately in stores for 60 dollars. If you really cared about game preservation -which you do apparently:

Not only does the PS5 not favor game preservation, but certain PS3 games are unable to get patches

- then you wouldn’t put imaginary goalpost on this such as “xbox will be around forever so who cares, halo infinite multiplayer will never go away, who cares. When we know that isn’t true.

They themselves have described it as a 10 year game. What happens after? Your halo infinite campaign poofs?

Does fortnite have a single player campaign that is sold in stores separate from the multiplayer? Can that campaign only be played if the multiplayer is installed?

I can still play my most of og Xbox games, especially the "1st party titles" 21 years later natively with the disc.

I think I'll be ok.

I can't say that for ANY other current gen gaming consoles on the market right now
