Let me start off by saying that I'm agnostic.
I remember once when I was having a conversation with my dad, who is a christian, where he became very upset that I did not see the need to believe or worship a higher power. He began asking me questions about what my conviction is, what gets me through the day, what do I believe in, etc...none of which I had an actual concrete answer for. Most I could say is that each of those things really just come natural, and it's not necessary for a higher power to invoke any of them.
He ended the conversation by saying that he hopes that I never am in a situation where I'm hopeless, to which I said I can't ever see that happening. By nature I'm a very optimistic and patient person. I understand that life is full of ups and downs, so even in a bad situation I believe that things can easily turn around for the better. The thing is I can't say I've ever been in a major situation where it seemed there was no way out, so perhaps my perspective is just really naive.
My question is for both you religious and non-religious brehs/brehettes: What is it that gives you hope? Have you ever reached a point of hopelessness? If so, how did you fight through that period? Do you even believe that hope is something to be given in the first place?
