A search for a suspect is underway after a 9-year-old girl was killed and her mother was injured during a shooting carried out by the woman’s ex-boyfriend in the Heights Monday night, Houston police said.

HOUSTON – A search for a suspect is underway after a 9-year-old girl was killed and her mother was injured during a shooting carried out by the woman’s ex-boyfriend in the Heights Monday night, Houston police said.
The victim was later identified as 9-year-old Khylie Sorrells. Her mom said she was a good basketball player who loved to make TikTok videos
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 404 Oxford Street around 9:54 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, police said they learned there was a domestic disturbance between a man and woman.
Police said Sorrells was living with a male cousin who was downstairs talking to a friend when her ex-boyfriend showed up at the apartment.
The victim had dated the suspect for eight months but the relationship ended two months ago, police said. They added that Sorrells had already filed reports against him.
Jones has a criminal record and was already out on bond for felon in possession of a firearm.
The cousin alerted the mother that the ex-boyfriend was there and that he looked upset, police said. However, the suspect was able to gain access to the apartment right away since the cousin had left the door unlocked after going in and out.
At that time, the three girls were inside a bedroom watching TV when the suspect came in and was upset that the mother might be talking to other men since their break-up, police said.
The suspect then ripped the TV off the wall and left the bedroom. Police said the mother followed him into the living room as they continued to argue. The man asked for her phone and then became more upset about her messaging with someone else.
Police said the child, who was identified by her mother Brittany Sorrells as Khylie Sorrells, was shot in the head. Brittany was shot in the shoulder, according to HPD. Both victims were taken to the hospital, where police said Khylie was pronounced dead.
“We know who the suspect is and we have units looking for him,” Lt. Horelica with HPD said.
A 1-year-old and 7-year-old were also at the residence during the time of the shooting, police said. Investigators said those children, who are of no relation to the suspect, were not harmed and have been placed with family members.
Horelica said the suspect has been identified as Jeremiah Jones, 22. Sorrells reportedly had not seen Jones in a few weeks and was warned by neighbors that he was there. Horelica said a fight ensued and the children were separated from their mother.
That is when the suspect ran back into the bedroom and fired two shots, police said. He then came back and pointed the gun the mother’s face and then made her get on the ground.
The suspect started shooting again, hitting the mother in the shoulder and then he took off in his car, police said.
Jones then went into the room where the 9-year-old was and intentionally “executed” the child, Horelica said.
“Since that relationship had ended between them, he was upset about it,” Lt. Horelica said.
Police said Jones fled the scene in a dark-colored Camaro with the license plate number RTY0500. A search is currently underway as officers try to find him.
Horelica said Jones was out on bond for violating a protective order the woman filed against him. He has an extensive criminal background stemming back to when he was 12 years old, including theft and reckless driving. He is now facing capital murder and assault charges.
Police said Sorrells has made calls to law enforcement about Jones prior to this incident.
Sorrells has given KPRC 2 permission to share a GoFundMe page she created to help pay for funeral expenses
Jones' brother showed up at the scene and said he's being wrongfully accused and has an alibi. He said Jones will turn himself into police later today.
This is the second deadly shooting involving an innocent child in the Houston area in less than 24 hours. A 7-year-old our boy died Sunday night in an unrelated drive-by shooting in east Harris County.
