Houston authorities have released new details after an off-duty Houston Police Department officer allegedly shot his wife in the face in their northwest Houston apartment early Monday morning.
Galib Waheed Chowdhury, 31, has been charged with aggravated assault of a family member with serious bodily injury and has been fired, HPD announced in a Friday evening tweet. Chowdhury's bond has been set at $125,000, per KPRC 2.
HPD and Houston Fire Department personnel responded to calls around 12:45 a.m. about a shooting at the Westerly Apartments, located on the 10300 block of Clay Road in northwest Houston, according to KPRC 2's Erica Ponder. Police said they found a 30-year-old woman identified as Chowdhury's wife who had suffered a gunshot wound to the face. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital to undergo surgery.
HPD Chief Troy Finner said during a Monday morning news conference that the rifle Chowdhury used in the alleged shooting was not an HPD-issued weapon, according to Finner. The alleged shooter had served as an HPD officer for two years and was assigned to the Northwest Patrol Divison, according to an HPD news released issued Monday.
